Hot on the heels of one Liverpool producer making his debut on MOS (John Heckle) is another Merseyside producer, ASOK, also making his label debut. Born Stu Robinson, he is the man behind cultured and burgeoning house and techno label Scenery Records, has released on Deep Space Orchestra’s Use of Weapons and, though he has firm roots in d&b, has proven himself adept at crafting raw analogue jams that fuse house and techno together into compelling new forms.

Opening up his Poltergeist EP is ‘Project Poltergeist’, a fizzing brew of incessant hi hats and prominent acid lines that duck and dive between nicely roughshod claps. It’s misty and mystic and immediately feels at home on this label given its heritage. ‘Smash Dimensions’ is a little more stripped back, again placing lots of focus on a lively acid wiggle, but this time dealing in a more serene sense of mood that loosely chucks open and closed hi hats into a grainy arrangement that gentle jacks throughout.

On the flip, ‘Walker’ takes us on a cerebral voyage through raining melodic droplets, crushed percussion and lumpy drums before final track ‘Captain Blood’ pairs a dirty, gnarly bassline with crisp cowbell tinkles and more nicely frayed percussion. This is hugely textured house music with a sombre sense of soul that really manages to take you places.

Rose E Kross is the solo moniker of Brooklyn based musician, Katie O'Sullivan. She is half of the duo Further Reductions, who have released material on Veronica Vasicka's Cititrax and recently provided a remix of Steffi's "JBW25" via Ostgut Ton. 

As a DJ, she focuses on driving the dancefloor with special attention to mood and texture, drawing across genre boundaries past and present. She's put together a mix of raw techno and dark industrial tracks for the 37th Good Room Podcast.

Coming into producing through a series of events that involved a producer suddenly leaving the hip hop label he was signed with back in the early 90s, DJ Maaco had already gained himself quite a reputation as one of the best live DJs in the area of Detroit. Producing, however was something completely new to him and the sudden request from the label owner for him to become their new producer helped kicked things in motion for the eventual setting up of MAP Records, a label he set up with close friend Odell. Together, they came into prominence as production and DJ duo, Detroit In Effect, releasing a string of classic Detroit electro, that started to turn heads overseas as well as on home turf. We caught up with DJ Maaco at length, questioning him about DJ battles and block parties in Newport, Detroit, how he met Odell (P-Dog) through taking his DJ spot at a club and debut Europe tours organized by Clone back in 2003. His detailed responses shine a light on characters who might not not have had the same exposure and breakthrough success as people like Underground Resistance but who still laid the blueprints for a thriving community of music lovers, dancers, DJs and party goers in Detroit during the late 80s and early 90s. His Truancy Volume, racking up at an hour in length, is pure 'Detroit-style' as he describes himself, with fast, hard mixing getting thrown down over quick cuts and plenty of scratching. It's the most 'live' sounding Truancy Volume we've had in a while, working through tracks by D.I.E themselves as well as music from Lathun Grady, Body Mechanic, Missy Elliot and more.
