This is an updated version of Bryan’s 2014 TEDx talk, Of Two Minds, which focuses on helping creative people utilize their instincts to pursue their own path and break through in the business world.  Bryan also provides context for Creative Confidential, a weekly podcast and his exploration of the worlds of the arts, commerce and the law and where they intersect. Bryan sets the stage by discussing what his influences are, what themes will run through the podcast, and what listeners can expect to hear along the way.

Steve Coleman is a critically acclaimed international performer and one of America’s greatest ambassadors for jazz worldwide.  Steve has performed with Michael Brecker, Jack DeJohnette, Branford Marsalis, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Sting, Bobby McFerrin and Sarah Vaughn, to name a few.   Steve talks with host Bryan Tuk about Steve’s interactions as a young man with jazz legend Max Roach in New York City, Steve’s travel and performance around the world, and how his non-profit organization, M-Base Concepts, provides educational outreach to young people. Stephanie Gardner is a writer and director for film and theatre.  Past clients include Ellie Wiesel, Yale University, Urban Stages, and Miller Symphony Hall in Allentown, Pennsylvania.  Her most recent film, “If I Had A Piano (I’d Play You The Blues)” has won Best of Show at the Greater Lehigh Valley Filmmakers Festival.  Stephanie received an MFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and a BA from The George Washington University. Eric Mintel is a well known jazz pianist and band leader in Philadelphia and eastern Pennsylvania. The Eric Mintel Quartet’s performance at the 2015 Allentown JazzFest was one of the highlights of the festival.  Eric and host Bryan Tuk discuss Eric’s origins and influences as a musician, how Eric became one of a handful of people to ever perform for not one but two US Presidents at the White House, and how he approaches his craft and runs a successful performing ensemble. Fred Morrison is the Executive Director of Crossmen Productions, Inc., a large arts nonprofit based in San Antonio, Texas. The flagship program is the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps, which is comprised of 150 of the best musical and dance performers in the marching arts world. The Crossmen tour the United States every summer for two months, traveling over 12,000 miles in that time.

The Bryan Tuk Complex: Life In High Gravity highlight reel

One of the proudest achievements of my playing career was being a member of the 1992 Crossmen battery.  While there are some recordings from that time period floating around, this is the one that occurred the latest in that magical season: DCI Quarter Finals on Thursday, August 13, 1992 at Camp Randall Stadium, Madison Wisconsin.   

If someone has the Finals judges tapes, I would love to hear them, but as far as we (the other members of the '92 team) can tell, this is one of the last recorded performances that we have. 

I believe the judge is Mike D'Angelo, and for those who are interested, this is a good snapshot of how good that ensemble really was.  Quality, quality, quality across the board, a now legendary drum book from none other than Mark Thurston, and front ensemble book by Kirk Gay and John Evans.

We were lucky to have been his guys and gals for that season.  Enjoy.
