2022 Sets

Based in Washington DC, Jackson Ryland is a producer who's been around for a hot minute. His latest record has just dropped on Step Recordings, a well established imprint run by Catz N' Dogz. However, he has been making music for many years before this having released material on the likes of 1432 R and Cahoots Records. 

His sound is pretty versatile, drawing upon influence from the age of Italian Dream House and beyond - melody is important, as is spaciousness and ambience. All of his music makes sure to take the above into consideration and whilst his latest material for Step Recordings is arguably his most heavy hitting to date, it is still just as listenable from the perspective of an individual. 

In a recent interview for The Washington Post jackson reflected on the nature of his approach to music - it's far more than just material for the dance:

"I want the music to complement something that’s already in your head and brighten that idea for you.”

We invited him to record a mix for us and he does so in fine style, this one comes with high recommendation.

"The mix was recorded at my studio, Metal Box, which is situated on a peninsula where the River Lea meets the Thames. I recorded it late at night, looking over the river and the adjacent steel factory. I used two Technics 1210s, my trusty old Vestax PMC-46 mixer and a RE-20 Space Echo pedal.

I only DJ with vinyl, a habit I don’t think I’ll ever break. Some of these records, like the Shake’s Frictionlized and Florence, are 30 years old, so please excuse the scratches.

I didn’t plan this mix, just decided on an opening record and rolled from there, which is how I play out - searching for blends and that magical feeling when two records meet and form something new, channelling the feeling of unity and escape that occurs when you get lost in the music." - Richard Fearless

We are more than thrilled to welcome a sounder host for the premiere, one of the masters in the scene, Jeroen Search. 

An introduction is not necessary, but we seize this debut to pay an affectionate tribute and gratitude for their pieces, courtesy, remark formality, and kindness. 

To note some traces of his impeccable career; named by many as a source of inspiration, Jeroen Search embodies a clear and honest interpretation of techno music. The Dutchman is one of techno’s most infuential producers, but is also a well-kept public secret. Known for his genre defning inimitable sound and energetic performances as well as truly inspirational live-sets, he has always kept himself at the very edge of contemporary techno.

Consistently releasing high quality music since the mid- nineties, Jeroen is always right at the sharp end of the techno-spectrum.
This can be found in his releases on his own imprint Search, as well as on labels such as Axis, Token, KEY vinyl, and Figure, to name a few. While continually evolving, his music always remains true to that typical Search-sound.

In 2021 Jeroen contributed music for a conceptual modern dance project for the famous Pinacoteca Museum in São Paulo, Brasil.
He also took part in a theater show working with a choreographer, dancers and an video artist, performing his liveset combined with modern dance and visuals.

Jerome earned his stripes in London’s illegal rave scene in the 90s, with a hands on mixing style full of fast paced transitions, scratching, and some unexpected gems scattered across his sets. 
His prowess behind the decks, and his management of many record labels (Don’t (est. 2000), Super Rhythm Trax, Bleeper, Fat Hop and Hornsey Hardcore) has often left his own productions overlooked by many. Discerning selectors, however, have long supported his tracks, making them a feature in the sets of Aphex Twin, Helena Hauf, Ben Sims, Craig Richards and so many more.

For this episode, we invite you to step into Jerome Hill’s Bside Bazaar, an array of oddities and collectible sounds, free from the bounds of genre, forever intriguing selections from the flip side.

Lupini is a DJ and broadcaster based in Liverpool. She is a bit of an unsung hero if you ask us, having worked tirelessly behind the scenes of endless projects and as the station manager at the city’s Melodic Distraction.

More recently she has been broadcasting music on NTS, on which she has launched her own show and has gathered a core following of listeners who have gravitated towards her selections which span the breadth of dub, post punk, ambient and the leftfield fringes of electronic music.

She’s been pivotal in helping to push and promote a wealth of musicians from the North and has documented this off piste music culture from Liverpool, Manchester and beyond for the love of it growing as a DJ and an artist in her own right at the same time.

This tape reflects a scenario she describes as being best listened to on “a fuzzy Sunday with a Scorpio-rising full moon, as folks come in on the roll-through and need their heads rattling a bit.”

'By the early sixties, the song on the A-side was the 'hit' song that the record company wanted radio stations to play. The B-side would contain less radio friendly and less popular tracks. In our eyes the B-side is a true reflection of the producers taste in music, there is more personality on that side of the record'.
