"Fugue, Waltz, Canon" is based on a menacing four-note theme which is stated at the beginning and seems to pervade all of the piece. But gradually, this theme is shown to be a mere façade for a more urgent theme: B-A-C-H. Bach, after all, is the reason this composer is interested in things like fugues and canons in the first place.
He prevails in the end, of course, as Bach always does. After a series of reversals, the piece concludes unambiguously affirming his name.

This piece was written for the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic as a senior thesis at Carnegie Mellon School of Music.

Fugue, Waltz, Canon

The Carpe Diem String Quartet performs "Going Ahead" from my string quartet. The title takes its name from Glenn Gould's "So You Want to Write a Fugue?" This piece won the 2014 Harry G. Archer Undergraduate Competition in string quartet writing at Carnegie Mellon University.

Words In The Mist: Dark Corner

In this episode I introduce the series and discuss my recent Sahara video.

AlternateHistory Elaborated: Green Sahara

Florian Helgath (conductor), Heather Cotrell (violin), and the Munich-based Via-Nova-Chor premiere this piece, which I wrote for the conductor in 2014. The piece is a loose adaptation of the 15th century lovesong, "Mille regretz," which tells of a lover's sorrow upon departing his love on a long, maybe terminal, voyage.

The original song is sung at the beginning. My adaptation begins at 3:38.
