Miami Horror - Sober feat Queen Magic (Childish Gambino Cover)

This November we will be releasing their latest EP (produced by Pulp's Steve Mackey) stateside, featuring the sloppy, sludgy, searing single “No” with MASSIVE guitars, cantankerous drums, and a defiant, vox maelstrom. It’s gonna gnarl through your speakers and bludgeon you with pure nihilism fuzz. Following “No” on the A-side is “Alas Salvation” a song so chewed up and spit out it could pass for The Upholsterers covering DNA. The B-side ditches the bulk of the grit and instead keeps things icy, mellow, and lonely with “Out on a Limb.” It’s a stately and necessary respite till you flip the wax and strap back in for the A-side. PLUS noted artist and photographer Nick Waplington has copiously tackled the cover art. It’s beautiful and violent use of color are a welcome and complimentary addition to this package.

So sit tight and take hold. Yak is poised to make noise and it’s in your best interest to get on board early and maybe JUST MAYBE you could be the coolest kid at school.

>> Three years after the release of their self-titled debut LP, Shark Toys follow it up with ten more bursts of weirdo punk. Nine originals and cover of the Mekons classic, “Where Were You.” Ever since forming in 2008, the band has developed a reputation for sharp and choppy live sets, developing a loyal following around their home town of Los Angeles and around the US, from playing shows with bands like Ty Segall, Protomartyr, Parquet Courts, Terry Malts, the Urinals and many others. This batch of tunes were taken from the same session as the recent 7” single, a split with Florida’s UV-TV, on Emotional Response, earlier this year, recorded by Dave Fox of the Traditional Fools (who also recorded Fuzz, Scraper, Vial, and Wand).

Empty Cellar Records is stoked to announce the third full-length release by San Francisco’s Cool Ghouls, Animal Races. Fans of their self-titled debut and 2014’s A Swirling Fire Burning Through the Rye will be similarly stoked to hear how this band has continued to evolve. If the first album was a celebratory debut, and the second an earnest venture into deeper waters, this third album is like the crystal born of the murky womb that was the second record, fertilized by the initial intention of the first. Not only have the ghouls reaped the crop they sowed; they’ve baked it into some new kind of bread.

For the uninitiated – Cool Ghouls play rock'n'roll. That's about all there is to it. They're California natives. They try to do a good job. They like to try to elevate and get far out. They also like to keep it real. They like to make friends and have a good time. They don't like bullshit. They want to keep growing and learning how to become more powerful musicians. This record reflects the discoveries they’ve made over the last five years about live performance, themselves, and each other.

The eleven tracks, recorded to tape by Kelley Stoltz in his backyard studio and mixed by Mikey Young (Total Control etc.), are first and foremost documents of the four-piece’s live performance of the tunes. Many of the songs were road-tested, but - unlike the prior records - a few of them were not. This opened the door for some new looks: an acoustic guitar, some synth, upright piano, a little pedal steel wizardry from Tom Heyman, etc. It’s Cool Ghouls doing what they’ve always done, but in more ways and better.

Animal Races will be available on LP/CD (8/19) in the US via Empty Cellar Records and the EU/UK via Melodic Records; and also, on cassette via Burger Records. All versions feature full-color artwork painted by Shannon Shaw (Shannon and The Clams).

Emanating from the heartland, Sat. Nite Duets make rock music that evokes the spirit and candor of the Midwest’s greatest outsiders. Imagine the heroism of GBV thrown against the self-reproach of the Violent Femmes and you're halfway there. Pepper on some of the depravity of Jimmy and Dennis Flemion and you’re basically in the homestretch. But there’s something else going on here too, something that has to do with how most of the members have played music together since middle school, how collectively they’ve probably listened to The Basement Tapes and Blue Album like 3 million times.

The new record is called Air Guitar, the latest full-length since Electric Manland did the worm across college radio in 2013. Composed in true and perfect form (erratically in a basement in Milwaukee), Air Guitar continues the democratic tradition established by One Nite Only in 2009 and Summer of Punishment in 2012. A labor of love and leisure, Air Guitar’s tracklist features songs by all six of the band’s regular members, not to mention contributions from a laundry of special guests (e.g. a cognitive musicologist, the bass player's dad, a mime).

Essential Tremors is something of an anomaly in a city steeped in twang, bathed in sunshine and besieged with hootenannies. Code Knr, Miller, Read Only Memory, Tan, and Eerie Neighbor make up the group voted most likely to trigger a cold sweat, and we love them for it. In the past year, the band has made the charge away from guitar music with a quiet strategy of sporadic shows of crawly, four-track downer violence. During this metamorphosis, the band cut tracks with former Terrible Two and current Serration Pulse synth-lord and tone-boss Daniel Tomczak, crafting a crisp record that is globally exasperated and groovy against all odds: a nosedive into a cesspool of circuit-bent pollution with all the precision intact, notoriously tense, rife with white-knuckle paranoia and fog. Throw in well-placed pangs of electroclash, swirling synth, waterlogged bass lines, and dark-sided shit, and you have an important reminder that good times are not forever, which we are honored to bring to your turntable. This is music for strays. Do you have a home?
