DJ Mehdi est l’un des premiers producteurs à avoir considéré le rap comme une matière sonore à part entière. Dans « 1001 nuits », tiré du carton monumental que fut Les Princes de la Ville, il va donc sampler un sample : en l’occurrence, la basse inquiétante de « Clan in da Front » (Wu-Tang Clan), elle-même chipée par RZA dans un titre soul des New Birth (« Honey Bee »). Solution de facilité ou coup de maître ? Peu importe, c’est justement la superposition improbable de Vitry-sur-Seine sur Staten Island qui fait toute la réussite du morceau.
