Sonic storytelling from Glasgow's ambient power duo Somewhere Press. The mix is, according to Caapi and Lizzie Urquhart, a musing on the Divine Feminine, which got me thinking about something James Hillman, archon of all things archetypal, said about the study of Beauty. Apparently (so says James) the ancient root of the word "Aesthetics" comes close to meaning "I breathe in" and the mixes, releases and vibe of Somewhere Press has certainly breathed something beautiful into Glasgow's musical landscape. Mega psychedelic episode coming in for number 70 from old friend and Music From Memory boss Tako Reyenga @tako-reyenga @music-from-memory. Once described as the 'wise yoda' of the Amsterdam scene and a massive inspiration to many with his golden ears and endless curiosity. Whether via his work opening cultural institution and our favourite Dutch pub Red Light Records, releasing music with Jonny Nash as Sombrero Galaxy or compiling lost 80s and 90s gems for MFM and Into The Light, anything Tako touches comes with a big stamp of approval. Enjoy this mix of French kosmiche from Vague Imaginaires, wide-eyed, extra-terrestrial US wave from Cerebral Hemorrhage, Dutch ambient from Michel Banabila and loads more we couldn't recognise.

Having James Shinra back on AF is always a cause for celebration, and doubly so this time because we present 'Meteorites’, his second album following the highly acclaimed Vital Heat (2018). During 2023-24, James uploaded a series of digital releases called 'Meteorites’, a set of dreamy and introspective tracks where the artist showed his evolution and maturity, refining the emotive sound that's his trademark and has garnered so much praise in recent years. We should do justice to that material, giving it a worthy treatment/format, so we decided to release all together. James has revisited and reworked many of the tracks for the occasion, polishing, adding, removing… and the result is 'Meteorites', the album. A MUST for all braindance sensibilities and nonconformist electronic  heads. We're sure it will remind you exactly why you loved this talented guy for so long and why he's one of the most uncompromising artists working in electronic music these days.

Brokenchord's Ernestas is back with another show, presenting one hour of generous folk, indie and kosmische deviations, filled with tracks selected by the rest of the band's members. In his own words: This one is way different than last, I asked my bandmates to pick a few tracks each and this one is more about stuff I've been currently listening to, also decided to make it here on a road while drinking Italian coffee in the mountains, so it's messy in a good way.

He sat upon a little hill beside the bridge and looked out upon the river which passed down beneath. It was hard to see the ripples of the water but for the occasional flicker of the headlights which whizzed by up there on the overpass. Some people came out here from time to time to spot the northern lights but there wasn't much moving in the wayward sky this evening. 

There was a near silence in the air, the occasional scream of something wild in the woods in the distance would echo across the snow capped fields. 

He took a deep breath and watched as it filled the air with fog.

Signals Aligned

The warm afterglow of a weekend of music. Smoke filled rooms and comforting tones, all shades of ambient and beyond. This is what I played for my set on Sunday, the final day at our annual barn gathering. Everyone melted into couches, flitting in and out of consciousness. As light turned to darkness ever so gently, we all took turns providing a sonic window into what the day of rest and recovery means.
