After meeting in Ulm we decided we should try doing something together, so I took the Walhallian music by OL for a remix. The driving arpeggio is done with help of the MIDI-In on my tiny Yamaha CS-01 (thanks, Jacob Korn for installing the kit). As Longitude is the Berlin based duo founded by Eva Geist and Laura ODL (also known as Ondula), which appeared in the new electronic scene after last year brillant number on Knekelhuis and appearance on the compilation Eine Welt vol 1..
In this EP their psychedelic madness that mixes in a very punkish way hypnotic sounds, voices and Saxo, bring us back to our bestial primitive instincts, when we were still close to animals. On the first track, which gives the title to the EP, the outstanding vocal performance by Berlin frontman and songwriter Paul Arambula reveals the duo’s wavy tendency in an unexpected song-form. The following tracks "NA Numbers", which features Simone of electronic duo Twoonky on the Saxophone, and "I thought it was Summer" maintain AL’s abstract although more tribal hypnotic thread.”Thats’ when the animals turned into humans” will be out on french Macadam Mambo on the 1st of december 2018.

Jane Weaver’s new ambient ensemble Fenella take on Marcell Jankovic’s 1981 animated fantasy epic ‘Fehérlófia’ out 1st November

‘Fenella’ is the latest project from Jane Weaver - musical polymath and one of the most respected electronic composers of recent times. Having already released three critically-acclaimed LP’s within the last five years Weaver’s creativity continues to expand ever further into the (modern) kosmos with this reimagined soundtrack to Marcell Jankovics’ cult animation Fehérlófia.
 
Released in 1981, Fehérlófia is a remarkable animation based in ancient folklore with a narrative culled from mythical tales of the Scythans, Huns and Avars. Weaver’s richly emotional and psychedelic music offers a perfect contemporary dialogue with Jankovics’ astonishing visual aesthetic. A mixture of ambient textures, menacing drones and spine-tingling vocals combine to create a lavish soundscape saturated with hypnotic moods and cinematic atmosphere.
 
Weaver’s long-term bandmates Peter Philipson and Raz Ullah decamped to a remote cottage on the Applecross Peninsula in north west Scotland to commence recording on the initial album sessions, making masterful use of synthesizers and heavily processed guitars to create evocative new sound-worlds for Jancovics’ imagery. Further overdubs and vocal manipulations were committed to tape at Eve Studios near Manchester, a haven for vintage analogue recording equipment and the same environment from which ‘The Silver Globe’, ‘Modern Kosmology’ and ‘Loops In The Secret Society’ albums sprung forth.

A continuation of the Fire Records re-imagined score series, Fenella’s self-titled release is out 1st November on limited edition ink spot vinyl and crystal clear LP.

Fenella - Bright Curse

Grischa Lichtenberger’s music stands for broken rhythms, for high-density manipulations that emphasize the digital and fractal nature of its working process. A mindset that grew closer to contemporary jazz in recent years. Since free jazz, this genre also sought to overcome musical standards and looked for possibilities of an individual artistic expression. Within this context, the collaboration between Lichtenberger and jazz saxophonist Philipp Gropper as well as the resulting album are documents of this development. It also offers both musicians the opportunity to expand their familiar environment by breaking with expectations.
The foundation for »re: phgrp« were pieces from the album »Consequences« by Philipp Gropper’s band PHILM which Lichtenberger reinterpreted without giving up their original character. He rather looked for figures, subjects and reference points in the compositions to reflect and condense them. As »Consequences« was recorded with all the instruments in one room at the same time (like a classical jazz recording from the 1950ies), the extraction of individual instruments was a challenge which Lichtenberger took up with shifts, distortions and rearrangements of the original temporality of the material. Except for a few synthesizer sounds and an additional piano recording, he remained largely true to the source material, even though the tracks develop their own unique voice throughout the album.
»Re: phgrp (reworking ›consequences‹ by philipp gropper’s philm)« will be released in cooperation with Whyplayjazz in a limited edition of 500 CDs on October 25, 2019. The cover was screen printed and shows a compositional notation by Grischa Lichtenberger. The album marks the beginning of an encounter between Lichtenberger and Gropper that promises to continue in joint improvisational concert situations and further recordings in the future.

Notorische Reflexe was an experimental band, art form and a film performance group from West Berlin. Existing from 1982 to 1986, they were part of the early 80s Berlin art scene along with groups like P.D., Die Tödliche Doris, Einstürzende Neubauten or Malaria. Their only LP – originally released in 1985 – is an impressive outburst ranging from minimal electronics to more experimental takes with some jazzy/ethnic touches. Now reissued on LP and CD featuring a bonus track, extended artwork and liner notes by Mark Reeder.

The music on Sylva and its 84-page visual companion bear the beauty and strange shapes of nature: desert rock formations and colorful leaves, restless waters and peculiar plants. Meluch’s dreamy ambient drones and saturated lo-fi pop embody the impressionist sensation of his visual aesthetic – with this collection sound and vision are merged into an affectionate study of the organic.
