"Adrift" is the latest and the twelfth studio album by Bernd Jestram and Ronald Lippok. The Berlin-based indietronics/neo krautrock duo has existed since 1995. So far, they have released eleven regular studio albums, collaborated with various artists (including Piano Magic, Tuxedomoon, B. 'Science, Art And Ritual' is a story of ‘process'. Growing up in Harrow (a then quiet suburb of London) in the 70’s and 80’s from the age of about 10, Kingsuk Biswas aka Bedouin Ascent's ears opened up to sound as he scanned the airwaves. The undeniable righteousness of 80’s dub via David Rodigan’s Roots Rockers shows was the first prominent influence he received, and with punk roots —and his burgeoning record collection— became exposed to the breathless post punk experimentation that followed in the early 80’s sweeping up free jazz, noise, dub and much more. Throughout though, he maintained his fascination with Indian Classical music which was a mainstay in his parent’s house and spoke with the same infinite space as Joy Division's 'Unknown Pleasures', and King Tubby’s Studio dispatches. Through those teens he assembled and de-assembled, knocking about with fellow travellers —punk bands, garage, space rock, noise. Something was happening. On-U Sound, ECM, Factory Records kept him plugged in and sane.

At that time Kingsuk's core studio setup revolved around his vintage Gretsch, Fender Jazz, Moog, TR-606 and rudimentary FX. He added congas, folk instruments, pipes, hand percussion, gongs, and jammed out shards of funk, noise, jazz fusion, electro and ambience into his hungry Tascam Portastudio. By 1987 these had morphed into what we’d now refer to broadly as techno, but the genre didn't exist beyond the reverberating walls of his bedsit, and he hadn’t yet plugged into the global conversation.

'Science, Art And Ritual' was released in 1994 by Rising High Records and was presented as Bedouin Ascent's debut album, although 'Music for Particles' (released in 1995, again on Rising High) was recorded even before —'SAR' sessions span from 1992-1993, whereas 'Music for Particles' were earlier from 1989-1992, with some older 4-track references from about 1986 too.

Weaved in throughout the album are subconscious references to music that Kingsuk heard in the past that still remained within sight as companions. The opening track "Ancient Ocean III", referencing the extinct ocean Tethis, unapologetically channels Tackhead, Colourbox, Mantronix and Lee Perry. The style was also deliberately juxtaposed to the prevailing sound in techno at the time, which had locked onto a rigid form of symmetrical kicks and light snare drums. Elsewhere 80’s soul and funk are frozen and captured in fragile glass lattices. Electric pianos resound throughout, such as in "He Is She", probably a half-memory of 70’s MOR radio from childhood sleepy night drives. A duel between kick drums from three generations of Roland drum machines —TR-808, TR-707 and R-8— is a central theme in "Transition-R", all in conversation, calling and responding. These were not just machines to Bedouin Ascent, but part of an extended family, with heart and soul.

Three decades after seeing the light, Lapsus is proud to present a special 30th anniversary reissue of this left-field techno gem in a repackaged and redesigned edition. All pressed on a deluxe 3LP marbled vinyl and including a limited lithographic insert print of the original album cover. All tracks have been restored and remastered directly from the original DAT tapes, and the album also features previously unreleased tracks such as "In the Clouds" and "Thru Water" —regularly performed live at that time and produced in the same period as the album sessions in 1993.

'Science, Art And Ritual’ may refer to esoteric traditions in Indian philosophy, but equally embodies the collision of the science, the art and the ritual that is at the core of being immersed in a deep musical journey.

“Meanderings” is a mix that drifts through percussive experimentation, fractured rhythms, bold digital textures, soothing ambient + liminal, psychedelic vibes - the name being a nod to my own endlessly wandering listening habits (and the A. Song track, of course). 

It opens with a short field recording captured during a visit to my hometown on the New Jersey Shore - a cold winter November morning in the ocean air, a place I’ve always valued as one of the best to clear my head. This short audio file was simply labeled “bebey,” reminding me that I’d probably been thinking of Francis Bebey’s music during that walk. You can hear me lightly tapping and dragging on the boardwalk railing as I moved, likely inspired by the thought of his brilliant sanza (kalimba / thumb piano) work. Much of Bebey’s music has a hypnotic quality that I deeply resonate with, and "Sanza Nocturne" in particular has a special place as one of my favorite musical statements of all time. It felt right to let that energy guide the opening of this mix.

A quick note: 

The track "Beginner Race" is from the 1984 Atari arcade game Marble Madness. Playing this game in the arcade as a kid was an enormous inspiration. When I think about why I'm so attracted to esoteric music, the inspiration I got from early video games has to be up there. This game in particular - the soundtrack has always "haunted" me (in the best way possible). The only version I have found from the actual arcade game is on YouTube, which is complete with the noise (from what I guess are the chip limitations). Please note: I touched the track up slightly with some EQ and a gentle reverb that builds throughout. 

Marble Madness was the FIRST arcade game with TRUE stereo sound (previous games used monaural or simulated stereo). It ran on Atari System 1 hardware with (mainly) the Yamaha YM2151 chip. That’s part of why its soundtrack has those warm, eccentric digital FM tones that still sound exciting today.

"This little mix is a documentation of a magical summer in my house. I've had friends stay over during an intense long heatwave, and these tracks have been sketched out while hanging out drinking aperol spritzes and chilled wine, and after my friends have gone to sleep. It's a combination of sketches, short jams, almost finished tracks and repurposed bits. 
For those wondering who I am, I am a guy operating, quite comfortably, from the shadowy underbelly of the european experimental techno scene since the early 2000s. I was talked into releasing an EP on 030303 Records in 2014. Since then I've put out more stuff on Analogical Force, Love Love Recs, U.T.T.E.R., Furthur Electronix. 

I’ve gotten reports that both Autechre and Aphex Twin have DJ:ed my tracks, which is perhaps my biggest (second hand) achievement so far, since they are known for quite different styles of music.
