‘Winging it’ is a phrase (circa 1885) used by performers ‘depping’ for someone in the theatre, learning the part in the wings before going on stage.

Einstein determined that time is relative and that the rate at which it passes depends on your frame of reference.  Now I’m not saying that I’m much of a scholar of his work but what I do know is that when the Covid pandemic was at it’s height and we were all confined to our homes, many of those that I spoke to didn’t even know where in the week we were, let alone the time of day, so yer man Einstein probably had a point.

This song was written long before the pandemic surfaced and came during telephone and email conversations I had with my two fellow Cripple Club garage band members, Gary and Hans . For example, I was chatting to Gal one day when he said “You know, I just can’t get the hang of time, these days.  Weeks seem to just merge into each other”. 

On the very same day, Hans sent me an email in which he stated "I’m really struggling to get the hang of time at the moment…” As someone who spends much of his time at home anyway, the two ‘hang of time’ statements did resonate with me and therefore carried an intriguing synchronicity.  I’m not someone who thinks these things have any mystical significance but the fact that they had both used precisely the same expression on the same day certainly placed the idea for this song in my mind.

Thanks again to Hans for taking the concept and formulating it so brilliantly into his arrangement for the song.  And many thanks to you for listening.

Tomorrow, 22 August 2022, marks ten years since my brother Bri died. Hard to believe. I remember that day as if it were yesterday. His ashes were released into the River Thames, from the towpath that runs alongside Fulham football ground (quaintly known as ‘Craven Cottage’). He’d been a lifelong supporter of the club so this seemed a very appropriate resting place for him.

For those unaware of the sporting ritual, nearly every year since 1839, there's been a boat race on The Thames between Oxford & Cambridge Universities, held on a course between Putney and Mortlake. It is quite the occasion, with crowds lining the banks of the river for much of the four mile, 374 yard distance. It is broadcast live by the BBC and the Fulham stadium can clearly be seen as the crews row past. Guess who we think of when that happens?

When we were kids, we lived on a housing estate just a couple of minutes from the river, so Boat Race Day was always special. Every family was either a vehement supporter of the light blues of Cambridge or the dark blues of Oxford which seemed quite normal at the time but, thinking back, appears quite odd now. We were all decidedly lower class, with precious little chance of attending any university, let alone Oxbridge. But I clearly remember having a punch up with another kid on the estate because he supported Oxford. Total madness…but in my defence, I was very young at the time.

The family ritual was to watch the race on the telly until it reached Hammersmith Bridge, run to the river to watch the boats go by and then run back to see the finish. You still hear folks say “We had to make our own fun in those days” and I rather think this custom now falls into that deeply enigmatic category.

So that’s how Bri’s death has become inextricably linked to The Boat Race and the thoughts I have of him when the drone cameras look down upon the crews as they zoom past Craven Cottage. The fond memories always win out over the political bewilderment…and, strange as it may seem, I still want Cambridge to win.
