It was only a matter of time before the US exported a female techno fire starter, and her name is Shay De Castro. From Amsterdam to Guatemala, Shay’s been electrifying both veteran and new-gen ravers around the world with her explosive, melodic anthems. Characterized by hypnotic melodies, cinematic breaks, and thundering kicks, she’s found a home on some of the most influential techno labels today. Her releases top the Beatport charts regularly, signing on Factory 93, Kraftek, Respekt, among others. With support from the upper echelon of techno, it’s hard to attend a festival without hearing a De Castro detonator. Amelie Lens, Adam Beyer, Richie Hawtin, ANNA, and others are all regular players of her tracks.
However, behind those massive, menacing kicks, Shay is just a small-town girl at heart whose dreams have taken her further than she ever thought possible. From humble beginnings in Boise, Idaho, the Los Angeles- based artist’s success has only just been kickstarted.
If you look back at the best raves you’ve been to a year from now, Shay De Castro will surely be at the forefront. She’s carved out a niche where melodic and big room techno seamlessly meld together. Who would’ve thought ethereal and relentless would go together so well? As for 2023, Shay will only further solidify her place at the forefront of techno’s newest generation. Zen polymath Sebastien Mullaert’s project Circle of Live marshals a raft of diverse global talents for ‘free-flowing collaborative jam sessions in clubs around the world’. This time round it brought together the Swedish musician himself, plus Spazio Disponibile gaffer Neel and the moody soundscapes of German techno-pundit VRIL as part of their ongoing collaboration. What’s clear for anyone following these three trajectories: the trio couldn’t be more perfectly aligned, their occult compositions are bound by a set of influences that border on the metaphysical. The music itself: meditative, deep, ruminant and transformative. Bio:
After cutting his musical teeth in the underground rock scene of his native Adelaide, an increasingly nomadic lifestyle carried him through cities and music scenes from Australia, Germany, Italy to India. Where his eyes were opened to electronic music, thanks in no small part to the country’s rickshaw drivers and the Hindi dance tunes blasted from their oversized subwoofers.

Burnside distils his musical adventures into showstopping live techno sets, where he weaves melodies from digital noise and analogue synths over the pulsating 4/4 heartbeat of the German capital of Berlin.

Burnside’s current output is focused on these live performances, bringing a sense of improvisation and a certain punk rock energy to techno. Recorded in locations across Europe, you can stream his performances from Berlin clubs, studios, to some of the continent’s most breathtaking and off the beaten track locations such as: an alpine cable car in Austria or an abandoned hilltop castle in Italy.
