South Africa is a magical place, full of wild landscapes and wonderful people.  This was my fourth time touring in the country, and what a privilege it has been.  Johannesburg and Cape Town offer very distinct experiences as cities, but ToyToy and Killer Robot have both curated similarly authentic underground movements over many years, and their hard work and longevity really shows.  

The energy on both dancefloors was passionate, raw, and deeply connected to the music.  Like the two cities, each party has its own unique vibe, but the common thread was a love for and knowledge of deep, hypnotic, underground dance music and an appreciation for the craft of DJing.  Both parties have a 'no photos' policy.  We need more of this please.  

Huge respect to the folks behind ToyToy and Killer Robot for their dedication to keeping underground culture alive, in the face of so many modern headwinds.  

Here are excerpts from both sets.  Cape Town from the earlier, clubbier portion of the night, and Joburg when I was winding down the garden in the wee hours of the morning after a wild four hour ride with their world-class crowd.

We are going to Switzerland (by way of Argentina) for our next podcast to welcome techno artist Barem into the Balance Selections family. Best known for his releases on Richie Hawtin’s M_nus label, the producer has really made a name for himself with his warm, stripped back techno and house productions, a style which he feels encapsulates a feeling more so than an actual genre: “Minimal is not really a sound… it’s just a way of making music. It represents good taste, stylish sounds, the underground, after hours… Whatever native roots you have, whatever music you like or liked in the past, it all fits in there and it’s not dying in my opinion. It’s just arrived at the point where we’ve rediscovered how free and amazing the concept and the reasons behind it are.’’

But as with all good artists, career growth and change is essential to the soul, and last year the producer announced his departure from the M_nus crew to pursue new projects. And he did just that with  the announcement of FUN Recordings, a new label co-founded by Barem which is already 2 releases deep with tracks from Barem, and fellow Argentinean producer and label co-founder, Alex Cabrera.

Having played at some of the biggest global events cites including Detroit Music Festival, Timewarp, Miami, Ibiza and ADE, there really is no doubt that Barem is considered a major player in the global scene – and the Argentinean has delivered a suitably quality mix which should keep listeners coming back for more.

Growing up in the midwestern United States, Butane was steeped in the classic underground house and techno sounds that originated in Chicago and Detroit. Further influences came from afar: New York house, west coast house, UK tech house, Cologne techno, Berlin minimal.  His formative years were spent on the dancefloors of legendary venues like Twilo and Vinyl in New York City, Space and Crobar during Miami's Winter Music Conference, and Rednofive in Chicago.

An avid record collector and DJ since 2002, Andrew’s infamous monthly party in St. Louis established an underground scene in the city and became a must-stop for touring international artists.  In 2004, Andrew embarked on his own artistic journey in the studio, despite lacking any formal musical training (a classically trained pianist he was not).  Proving to be a fast learner, his unique and eclectic sound began earning him worldwide acclaim on international record labels in a mere matter of months.  The German press dubbed him a “wunderkind”.  He moved to Berlin shortly after, residing in the city from 2006-2011.  

Now a resident of San Francisco, Butane is renowned for a steadfast commitment to his craft, and stands as a pillar of artistic integrity and consistency in the rapidly changing realm of electronic dance music.  He values studio work over social media, and boasts an impressive and sprawling discography released by some of the most respected imprints in the business.  As the founder of three labels of his own - Alphahouse, Little Helpers, and his new Extrasketch project - Butane's impact on the industry is both deep and enduring.

For over two decades, Andrew has traversed the globe curating unforgettable sonic experiences.  From underground raves to name-brand clubs, electrifying festival stages to poolside soirées, he has graced the decks in over 60 countries.  Infused with energy, finesse, and sophistication, his sets resonate deeply with in-the-know audiences.  Armed with a meticulously curated collection of custom edits, remastered classics, and hidden gems from decades in the house and techno business, Butane draws on his considerable experience moving crowds to deliver versatile, unpredictable, pitch-perfect performances.
