This month’s episode, which welcomes Berlin based, LA bred producer and DJ, @SteveHuerta. 

Huerta moved to Berlin over a decade ago, seeking out the same dancefloor pleasures as all who make the pilgrimage to Berlin. With a central goal of making dance music, Steve cut his teeth producing and releasing on indie tech house labels, finding joy in creation. In the years since, despite breaking through with LPs like Junipero and TV Slang, a homegrown label called Leizure, and DJ sets that take him to festivals and dancefloors around the world, his joy continues to stay rooted in expression and creativity;  the simple pleasures of making and playing music. 

In this episode, we look back on a career spent persevering in an overly saturated Berlin music scene, the challenges of trying to make it as an artist, and the dedication required to stay afloat as a musician in 2025.

Episode 47 of the BSU podcast series comes from co-founder himself, @hamishcole. Now based down in London but still heading north for monthly throw-downs, this is a special mix that arrives ahead of the launch of Butter Side Up Records. 

It gives you a flavour of what to expect from the label and exclusively features music produced by friends and family, with mainly unreleased and forthcoming tracks, including some that will eventually make their way onto wax. Serving up the sizzlers are the likes of Christian Jay, Youandewan, Gene On Earth, Junes, BLM, Harry Mccanna, Crump, Tom Ellis, TMS and more.

Nicolas Lutz comes to us from Uruguay via Berlin and we believe he's on the move somewhere new as we speak, where to we don't quite know but that pretty much sums Nicolas up. He's an enigma, outside of the mainstream, nonconformist. This sentiment also perfectly sums up his DJing, always outsider, never predictable.  

Lutz's sets are immaculately programmed and include music that he has lovingly sought out, music will inevitably become hunted by an increasing numbers of his dedicated, record digging fans. Nicolas first played for us at our off Sonar event in Barcelona in 2017 and his attention to detail and ear for strange, memorable sounds stood out that day. Here he delivers a very rare recorded mix that takes in ambient sounds along with house, breaks, electro and techno but it's not the genres, it's  the underlying texture and detail on display that is the defining feature of episode 114. So ahead of his appearance at Fort Punta Christo for Dimensions 2018, sit back and lose yourself in two hours of Nicolas Lutz...

Combining over 15 years of experience in varied corners of dance music - most significantly, the vinyl corner, their history of feverishly sourcing obscure tunes has blossomed into a full-time job.

The vintage Mercedes bus-turned-shop takes them just a short distance around Berlin, feeding the voracious appetites of the city’s most discerning taste-makers and DJs. The musical journey contained therein is a much longer road, exploring three decades of house, techno and various other strains of underground electronic music. The end-product is a couple of ultra-refined record bags, traversing genres and styles with a zesty and unique approach - demonstrated seamlessly throughout this offering for our mix series.

You'll catch the duo at the final outing at the fort for Dimensions 2019.

<b>It’s reassuring to know that the young bloods still care; 
 that flooding charts is not always the MO, and that artistic value can still be prized above ubiquity. 
Take Fullbarr for example – a boutique label of love from the mind of 24 year old Arthur Barr. He’s not yet an established DJ, a hyped producer or anything else; rather he’s a fan of fine electronic music who wants to add to the global conversation with his own unique accent.

And he has been doing just that with an admirably DIY approach since 2010, fusing the depths of dub, the power of techno and the mood of house into mature and alluring soundscapes that take inspiration from “parties, music, artists and friends from around the globe.” It’s a simple and honest mission, and one that is serving the Bradford based label well, with support coming in from both on and offline press (think RA, DJ Mag, De: Bug). Of course, more important than what some holed-up desk jockeys say, is what the all important disc jockey says…. And alas, with plays and chartings from top-dogs including Delano Smith, Seth Troxler, Jozif, Ripperton, Kenny Larkin, Ed Davenport, Iron Curtis fullbarr can sleep easy.
