We are very happy to have a new Phase Group mix to share with you thanks to Jazz from Australia. 

Jazz lives in Naarm where she hosts the weekly Spaces Within Space radio shows every Sunday night at midnight on PBS 106.7 fm. Her radio shows and mixes  showcase an amazing selection and ability to blend varying textures, tempos and soundscapes that comes with a deep knowledge of electronic music. She's an in demand DJ in Naarm regularly playing in clubs around the city whilst working hard to push the local scene and she also recently released her first original music on @phenomenarecords in the form 'Subtype' a brilliant half-tempo, dubbed out, percussive, psychedelic acid/idm track that she produced in collaboration with Georgia bird.

Her mix for us moves through those same psychic, cerebral and echoing spaces, taking in downtempo acid, dark idm, lofi drum machine jams and  slow trance atmospheres.

Phase Group Mix - Jazz

Jazz is a Naarm/ Melbourne local with a regular presence via radio, festivals & clubs around the town. Running her own weekly show on  PBS 106.7FM ‘Spaces Within Space’, (@spaceswithinspace)   she also regularly frequent both  Skylab and Hope Street Radio. 

She has paved her way through the scene with a unique and distinctive style.. broken, psychedelic beats, electronica & rare genre-spanning gems pinned together with style & ease.

ONOMIX 006: Jazz

‘For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

So here we are, another year coming to an end, leading into a summer that we’ve been waiting for, for over 3 years now. Usually, things start to wind down around this time of the year but it would seem that things are just as chaotic as usual. Transitioning through seasons used to be a breeze, though nowadays, not so much. 
Someone who has never had any issues with transitions is this episode's contributor; Naarm local, favourite, hero, champion, Jazz aka Jasmine Rose aka the slowed-time surgeon.

Watching/listening to Jazz evolve over the last few years has been nothing short of fascinating, comfortably traversing from strength to strength, like jumping on Lilly pads across a pond, creating a ripple effect with each launch and each landing. She’s one of the very few with a firm grip on sub 110bpm chug, the queen of the slow roast; The slow lane is a hard lane to drive in, but Jazz has her HR licence, allowing her to cruise down the princess freeway, driving a semi with both eyes closed. Personally, I've had some life-altering experiences dancing to Jazz on a big outdoor system, her hypnotic wizardry has transported me back to primitive times on more than a few occasions. She’s also no stranger to radio waves, she hosts an incredible show dubbed ‘spaces within space’ on Naarm’s own community radio station PBS, as well as another show ‘hanging with the birds’ on the ever-magical Skylab radio. Both shows do an amazing job at summarising the current narrative of the electronic music landscape. If you aren’t already listening to Jazz and her doings, then it’s not too late, and hopefully, this mix will answer any questions you might have. 

Let us discuss said mix, in a purely bias and one-way fashion. I’d say it's impossible to encapsulate Jazz’s depth in an hour and ten minutes, but alas, I am very happily wrong. This mix serves up a refined tasting of her ethos and leaves you wanting more, and luckily there’s plenty more (link below). Her control and understanding is on another level, bending the laws of physics itself without missing a single beat, turning BPM into a construct. Explorations in digital dub, drenched d’n’b, downtime sonatas, and dance floor digestives, she truly has put all of herself into this, and that's exactly why we started this silly little music series. Time for me to shut up and for Jazz to take over (press play).

Echoes is a deeply personal exploration of place, memory, and transformation. The EP opens with a track originally composed for @laaarmusic’s debut at Fusion Festival - a tribute to the enigmatic atmosphere of the Seebühne stage. Dark, fog-laced, and full of tension, it captures the charged stillness of that moment: the unknown rising from mist and bass.
Following his move to Europe in December, Laaar found unexpected echoes of that same energy in the forest near his new home. Cold days and quiet walks inspired the remaining two tracks - introspective pieces shaped by solitude, shifting light, and the distant pulse of memory.
Echoes weaves these experiences into a soundscape that feels both vast and intimate, club-minded yet deeply reflective. A journey through fog and forest, rhythm and resonance.

We are pleased to host a mix by one of our favourite creatives in berlin who mesmerises with a mix that touches every corner with heart and uniqueness .

NM DJ is a recording and printing artist based in Berlin. Her vocal practice developed out of writing and reciting poetry at readings organized by TABLOID Press – a publishing house she co-founded with Zoe Darsee in 2014. She has collaborated as a vocalist with musical artists such as Perila, Special Guest DJ, Soho Rezanejad, and Ulla Straus, and in November 2019 performed a live set with exael on Berlin’s HÖR radio. As a designer, she has produced album graphics for labels including wood//work, Experiences Ltd., Uzuri, and Lillerne Tapes.

There's no question in the remarkable quality of the musical outputs that Melbourne has to offer. Every now and then however, something truly special comes across your musical desk. For me, one of the most exciting projects to come of 2020 is Acopia.

Acopia brings together three local Melbourne musicians @purient, @liluzu and @morganwright, commendable all in their individual endeavours, but together converge to showcase a contemporary incarnation of stripped back, emotional synth pop reminiscent of the 80s. Their debut EP 'For You I Try' is everything I love packaged in two neat little arrangements, warm yet melancholy and worthy of a tear or two. Acopia's less is more approach to music will no doubt see them flourish into their bright future. I'm counting down the days until we can see Acopia take the stage live, but for now Lachie, Kate, and Morgan joined me for a chat and one hour guest mix, broadcast live on PBS Melbourne for Passing Notes episode 81.

We have been a fan of his music since the beginning and have in most occasions stocked his highly sought-after releases here at the shop. Now we’ve been presented with an expertly crafted mix of mostly ambient music from the man himself and we couldn’t be happier with the result. trying to write a lil blurb about josh is an unjust task. this person is so many things for so many people in so many ways... truly a renaissance girl, here's someone whose generosity can only be rivalled by their incredible, unmatched sensibility for music old and new - and his patience to track down artists and convince them to release or re-issue their stuff on his label. diggers love to brag, but they impress little when standing next to giant like this: a lover who does it for the sharing, for the stories, to keep the myriad legacies alive and ready to inspire futures. i don't know how on earth and the cosmos i was lucky enough to be introduced to this bb, but i thank the great magicianess every day for this friendship. whenever we get to spend time together everything feels right. like the great tapestry makes more sense and comes full circle. whether we laugh or we cry or (likely) eat, it just reminds me that ugh, yes, despite all the pain and the dire prices to pay, it's worth it to live because of shared moments like this.

of course josh, in true self-depricating genius fashion, said this when delivering this beautiful mix: 'here is my mix. it's only songs from 2020 lol i am a dork'. well, it had to be released today cause we all deserve to have this on our players to help us elevate into a (hopefully shinier) 2021 while being thankful for the silver linings 2020 had - music does save. especially music that comes from a heart like josh's.
