The inaugural release of p.istol is introduced by Biodive, who sets the tone with his four track “Limpet Minds’ EP, written in the depths of lockdown from the producer's location in Cape Town. 



NAFF label head Priori contributes a hard-hitting remix of the title track, apt for the early hours and timed to perfection as the world slowly escapes the monotony of pandemic life.  

The b-side plays host to two versions of the thought-provoking 'Infinite Lifetimes', a blissful journey through electronic euphoria.

PIST001 // Biodive - Limpet Minds EP (w/ Priori Remix)

Having debuted on the label in 2020, Butter Sessions welcomes Naarm/Melbourne collective Polito back for their second full EP. A live techno four-piece comprised of producers Robert Downie and Finnian Langham with dancers Arabella Frahn-Starkie and Hillary Goldsmith, Polito describe themselves as "a meeting of improvised contemporary dance and live improvised techno music, working together to create entrancing performance experiences". In a live setting the stripped down machine rhythms and physical manifestations combine for a modern twist on the producer/dancer combination of rave's early days.

The Anticipate EP takes its name from the final track's Kafka-inspired vocals, capturing how Polito present the energy of those live performances through four tracks of techno with a stealthy intensity, seemingly about to ignite at any moment. As for the tracks themselves, each are best described in Robert's own words:

"QFHB was recorded using a eurorack modular system, TR8-S, OP-1, and features my voice ruptured into caveman vocals. The name is pretty self-explanatory. It's a big beat!

"'Costume Change' was recorded using a eurorack modular system, TR8-S and Reaktor. The name is a reference to the magical smoke and mirrors imagery that comes to mind when listening to this track. Like there's something cunning going on behind the scenes. We are distracting you with a raised eyebrow while we load up our next trick...

"'Journey Worm' comes at you hard right out of the gate. We always have to put a chugger on our releases. This track was recorded using a Moog Grandmother, TR8-S and a eurorack modular system. We wanted to make this one sound super springy and rubbery, like a thick alien worm ripping through a cross-dimensional portal.

"'Hug Yourself' was recorded using a eurorack modular system, TR8-S, Korg Arp Odyssey, and features vocals from Finn and me. The text in the middle comes from Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis, heavily edited to make it sound more abstract and textural. It has quite a theatrical quality, with a lot of characters here fighting for your attention. While the curtains are slowly closing on the stage, they're pushing one another out of the way to get one last moment in the spotlight.

"The name is simply a suggestion to bring yourself back to your body in a time of need, and dancing to a beat is the perfect way to get you there. It’s like the world is collapsing in the song but maybe all you need is already within you. You can always hug yourself."

Anticipate

Polito - Anticipate [BSD-03]

The label’s inaugural release unites contributions of 4 artists, with a common ground of techy, playfully modern-sounding tracks with a serious edge and a decent amount of bleeps.  The A-Side opens with a springy, chirpy, minimal tech groover by Berlin-based Rudolf C. It has a light, yet discernible shuffle that drives the track towards a smooth and sunny vibe. Tristan Arp from Mexico is draggin us into water with his captivating aquatic breakbeat groover. At times meditative, at times hectic, it keeps the mind busy with bubbles and waves.
On the flipside, things move forward at a higher pace. 
De Lichting co-founder and Amsterdam-based queniv is teleporting us into a darker environment with a minimal-ish, electro-ish tech nightmare with a merciless groove and little relief.
O-Wells, Die Orakel regular, rounds off the EP with an euphoric, light and choppy, garage-ish track with a restrained, suspenseful energy that only gets unleashed towards the end.

The sound of 2 artists; serious in their intent yet blowing raspberries at the cork sniffers/snobs, obstinate to the world of industrial decay press shots + plastic ravers.

Instead they straddle the Edge of Innocence. Residue of lines once written, now your own personal tightrope. You wobble to and fro as part of a troupe of ethereal jesters, composed of Lil’ Drummer Boi’s pitter pattering on Gravity Bongo’s. Both tracks repping and following the rhythm of the ozone bounce house. With enough elasticity you’ll ^^break thru^^, experiencing Possession by momentary ascension. The weightless sensation of falling in a circle; catch yourself if you please. Such transcendence is lucrative, the Paparazzi on hand to flash and burn the retina, providing instant short-circuit delusions of grandeur. Sonically every hard knock is met with a “bOinKK!!”, illuminating the dark yet cartoonish nature of the practice - guaranteed to make u skip, achieve the perfect sly pout. You and your gang can terraform into bodacious bass-bins, and cast your personal Redemption Arc onto the ether.

Inhibitions are to be absolved, and fat kickdrums to be followed. In this hyper-informed yet unknowing present tense, who can ignore the beat based intrinsic incentive to fuck up the circadian rhythm - the music becoming a byte-based silkworm, spinning its digital silk from synapse to synapse, until your brain is a translucent cocoon playfully ricocheting, the cranium its pleasure dome. Call the drum dealer.

In this program, we are situated in an open-world environment with a densely populated 3D rainforest installed. Here we will explore the realms of cybernetics and it's correlations between ourselves and the natural world.

Organic progressive breaks and a mycelial 303 acid line, infused with euphoric beauty, all maintaining the organic touch that really defines Luke's music.
