سال ۱۹۸۹ آیت‌الله خمینی، بنیان‌گذار و رهبر جمهوری اسلامی، فتوای قتل سلمان رشدی را صادر کرد؛ چون – به زعم او - در کتاب «آیه‌های شیطانی» به باورهای اسلامی توهین شده بود. 
این فراخوان سرنوشت کتاب و نویسنده را دستخوش حوادث بسیاری قرار داد؛ اجازه انتشار کتاب در بسیاری کشورها حتی چند کشور اروپایی داده نشد و چند کتابفروشی آمریکایی ِ عرضه‌کننده آن هدف بمب‌گذاری تروریستی قرار گرفتند. در نتیجه عمده کتابفروشی‌ها از عرضه آن صرف نظر کردند.
سلمان رشدی، متولد ۱۹۴۷ در خانواده‌ای مسلمان در بمبئی و فارغ‌التحصیل دانشگاه کمبریج، پس از انتشار کتاب‌های «کودکان نیمه‌شب» و «شرم» به عنوان شخصیتی ادبی شناخته شد.
انتشار «آيه‌های شیطانی» و تهدیدشدن به مرگ در پی فتوای خمینی، بالاجبار او را به زندگی مخفیانه کشانید. رشدی یک سال پس از آن‌که دور از ملاء عام به سر برد مقاله «حسن نیت» را درباره اثرش و آنچه در این مدت از سر گذرانیده بود نوشت و تاکید کرد: «بدون آزادی برای رنجاندن یا خشمگین‌کردن دیگری، آزادی مفهومی ندارد.»
