The long awaited debut LP “DEAD BROKE ON A FRIDAY” by Ghanaian artist Jason “Dieslow” Simpson will be released on 19th July, 2019. Dieslow is a producer turned rapper reinventing the trap hip hop scene in Accra, Ghana and on his latest project; Dieslow is sharp as ever, both as a lyricist and producer.
The key to his style is his ability to straddle through genres, and his latest effort is no different. Dieslow’s versatility has always been a strength of his, rather than a weakness. With music that serves as a firm rejection of the previous parameters placed between hip hop, electronic, house, and alternative music the Ghanaian talent's catalogue includes collaborations with the likes of KiddBlack, Super Squeeze, Black Stone, Odartei, Asi, EdgarTheDyke etc.
Dieslow’s tone, tempo and surrounding production demonstrates the wide-spanning nature of his ability and his natural multidimensional talent, and on DEAD BROKE ON A FRIDAY, his 11- song debut album this is more evident than ever. On this album, Dieslow laces a rich soundscape that sways between house, electronic, trap, dancehall and touches of jazz.
Even as new riddims, beats and grooves emerge hip hop itself is an offspring of African rhythmic patterns passed down through blues, gospel, funk, reggae, jazz and spoken word so it is no wonder that these sounds come full circle and blend effortlessly on Dieslow’s project.
He’s able to ride beats of different textures and tempos. With menacing lyrical content and unrestrained bravado the rapper flexes his lyrical skills on the battle ready “Just for the Record”, flirts with a house inspired production on “Risquee”, shows off his mack game on “Calm Me Down” and self-introspects on “No Cameras.” Dieslow along with collaborators known as the Deadbeat Conglomerate navigate relationships, sex, money, hustling and life in general and never run out of creative hooks and Dieslow uses a different flow on almost every song. DEAD BROKE sees every guest bring their A-game to an album that is poised to be great, considering Dieslow and his production team’s record.
The stories and themes vary from popping bottles and intrapersonal issues like mental health and existential anxiety many of us suffer from now and then.
DEAD BROKE ON A FRIDAY is an album that addresses the era of a deep decadence we find ourselves in. And is the perfect example of the lane Dieslow is carving out.
Effortless and potent from all angles, DEAD BROKE ON A FRIDAY entertains and is proof (if you need any) that the Ghanaian hip hop scene has some of the finest lyricists and producers not just on the continent, but worldwide, and most of them aren’t on your TV, radio, or even favorite blog.
