Disquiet Junto Project 0593: The Charm
The Assignment: Record the second third of an asynchronous trio.

Please note: While this is the third part of a three-part project sequence, you can participate in one, two, or all three of the parts, which have occurred over the course of three consecutive weeks. 

Step 1: This week’s Disquiet Junto project is the third in a sequence that encourages and rewards asynchronous collaboration. This week you will be adding music to a pre-existing track, which you will source from the previous week’s Junto project (disquiet.com/0592). Note that you are finishing a trio: you’re creating the third part of what two previous musicians began. Please keep this in mind.

Step 2: The plan is for you to record an original piece of music, on any instrumentation of your choice, as a complement to a pre-existing track. First, however, you must select the piece of music to which you will be adding your own music. There are tracks by numerous musicians to choose from. The majority are in this playlist:

(Note that it’s possible another track or two will pop up in or disappear from that playlist and discussion. Things are fluid on the internet.)

To select a track, you can listen through all those and choose one, or simply look around and select, or you can come up with a random approach to sifting through them.

Note: It’s fine if more than one person uses the same original duet track as the basis for their trio.

It is strongly encouraged that you look through the above discussion on the Lines forum, because many tracks include additional contextual information there.

Step 3: Record a piece of music, roughly the length of the piece of music you selected in Step 2. Your track should complement the piece from Step 2, and it should be placed dead center between the left and right stereo channels. When composing and recording your part, do not alter the original piece of music at all. To be clear: the track you upload won’t be your piece of music alone; it will be a combination of the track from Step 2 and yours.

Step 4: Also be sure, when done, to make the finished track downloadable, because it may be used by someone else in a subsequent Junto project.

Step 5: As with last week, you can contribute more than one track this week. You can do up to two total. If you choose to do a second, you should preferably try to use a duet track that no one else has used yet. The goal is for many as people as possible to benefit from the experience of being part of an asynchronous collaboration. After a lot of detailed instruction, that is the spirit of this project.

Deadline: This project’s deadline is the end of the day Monday, May 15, 2023, at 11:59pm (that is, just before midnight) wherever you are. It was posted on Thursday, May 11, 2023.

This assignment was right up my alley having spent many years making music that probably has inspired plenty of bad dreams. The last years have brought a desire to explore and make other forms of music than the linear dark ambient or disturbing that I have tended to fall back on. Even if the music is providing a higher vibration  I would still like there to be an otherworldly element, something unknown, exploratory, and abstract living there. I am more interested now to sometimes create forms of music that are higher energy, and bring hopefulness to spirit while retaining some elements of mystery, altered states, and stimulation. It seems a real challenge for me to make something positive that does not succumb to cliché, that isn’t cloying or contrived. 
The piece was conceived as a dream sequence beginning in that drifting half sleep after a good day perhaps, nap time , which is always so conducive to dream. Visions of angelic choirs welcoming from the mundane normality that is the usual daily bread. Slowly morphing into something a bit more sinister, UNKNOWN territory, a bit tenuous, a bit uncomfortable, bad carnival acid. Snippets of semi-familiar voices and scenes but not in any form known in ordinary waking states. Both abrupt and transitional changes rapid and slow. Not too blatantly nightmare but more deeply disturbing as juxtaposed absurdities & emotions come and go. Finally, A rescuing voice of hope shines through pulling consciousness back toward peace, and resolve. Familiar melodies bring us fully back and ready to start again renewed.

By the the time the composition was fleshed out no surprise that I have spent more time in the nightmare than the remedy, but it is what it is. At least the intro is uplifting. And true to (my) form even the rescue has some melancholy there. The best I could do.

Technical:
Worked up a few chord progressions in 3 sections using  the app Suggester starting with the C6/9. Playing around with different chords and voicings and borrowing from other keys so there is not an exact tonal center. Transferred the midi file to Ableton. Used the 3 sections to inform the basic overall structure, the hopeful angelic section as induction, more challenging chords later used near the end of the nightmare, & the final coda arising from the C69 at the end. Brought in a number of field recordings, including street scenes in San Miguel, Mexico, institutional spaces with people milling about recorded at a museum in Brussels, Chicago symphony orchestra tuning up then the DAT tape that was subsequently demagnetized, a thunderstorm….to be used during the nightmare. Ended up dropping some of them into Simpler to get smooth crossfades and good continuity. Cut & paste, extend, and process as usual. Love that convolution reverb.

Was reading a piece in a magazine at the end of a long trip up the Oregon River in 1997 about gratitude. The punchline was “the key to contentment is an attitude of gratitude”. Still working that 25 years later but grateful to have come across it, as it was needed and I have found it works. I continue to try to recognize and acknowledge as much as possible. This piece is dedicated to my wonderful wife Laurie who was delivered to my doorstep (literally) by some guardian angels (almost literally) just in the nick of time. Its a great story I won’t bore you with but suffice to say she is the best thing that has happened for me this lifetime and I express that as often as I can.
I started out thinking to make a piece as gentle and kind as she is, with a nod to the magical & beautiful music of the 1988 album Plux Quba by Nuno Canavarro, which we both love. Music that inspired Oval, Microstoria the rest of the A-Music crew in Germany.

The piece quickly moved towards the Eno/Budd/Frippery I am increasingly falling into... Started with the Roland Jupiter-6 lovely marimba like patch and developed a theme which was played around with and replicated/altered with another track of digital piano. Added in an Arturia Analog IV Synclavier patch for a few slight synth/stringish swells, finally added 2 guitar overdubs and a few very distant field recordings made in Mexico and Spain.

Took a day or 2 to hear that Brian Wilson got ripped off,. but it came out of my heart first, the Bacharach Trombone was totally obligatory and premeditated. 

This was my chance to do that Princelike super pop tune with a bunch of Key changes ala Earth Wind & Fire but you know, my plans, if I have them, rarely make out the brain onto the tape. I start something and it takes off with a life of its own that i have to then see through to the end. Man I really really needed these weekly assignments to get into a more productive workflow and to keep learning new things about music, so thanks Marc and everyone involved in this really cool weekly challenge, a lot of great music here.

I really like the track that was produced by @glitcher, Nobody's Home.  And then the atmosphere added perfectly from @Sinny made Somebody's Home an irresistible track to add to.  So I tried to add some guitar on the left channel and some synth on top without drowning out the clicks and buzzing that makes a home a home and called it Never Alone.  Some compression was required for this, however and I hope the result is satisfactory to the two artists I have borrowed from.
