This time the dynamic house music culture of South Africa is reflected by the rhythms and sounds of Batuk’s debut EP, Daniel. Batuk is a creative collective founded by South African electronic music producers Aero Manyelo and Spoek Mathambo; along with the prolific artist and vocalist Manteiga.

Two original tracks, Daniel and Reya Congo, offer a hypnotic take on tribal house, and feature the vocal talents of frequent collaborator Nandi Ndlovu. Next to the 2 original tracks, are remixes from an international cast of club luminaries including German luso music aficionado Daniel Haaksman, Angolan afrohouse duo Homeboyz Music, and Mozambican best kept secret (till now) producer/DJ Freddy Da Stupid.

From slow-burners, to straight up peak time anthems, our favourite changes every time we hear them and we're sure you'll find your own one to treasure. Enjoy.

Batuk - Musica da Terra

Batuk's debut album, Musica da Terra, is a brave and genre-defying record featuring the the collective seemlessly expressing a variety of influences from zouk, afro/tribal house, techno and traditional African music. 

The album features collaborations with artists such as Nandi Ndlovu, Grupo Zore and Grupo Makarita (Mozambique); Giovanni Kiyingi, Annet Nandujja, Lebon and Nilotica (Uganda).

2016 will see Batuk performing their exciting live show worldwide.

The word Crudo [ˈkruːdo] in Italian translates as “raw” and this is the overarching concept around the latest Gqom Oh! Release. 

It is set to be in collaboration with Crudo Volta - a young Rome-based collective who focused on visual curation and dj culture. The mixtape is the soundtrack of the Woza Taxi documentary. Making the documentary in April 2016 - whilst visiting his artists and their families in Durban - label boss Nan Kolè painstakingly narrowed down this selection of tracks for the release. The trip lent a tremendous amount of in-sight to Nan Kolè, granting him both a detailed and broad view of the Gqom scene and what Gqom means to the youth of the township (for they consist the core music makers and listeners of Gqom).

Their unique sound, which took Europe by storm at the start of 2016, is a way for the youth in the township to express themselves - something that music does the world over - but moreover enables them to express their pride and experiences in their Zulu culture and history. Mawbestana from Forgotten Souls gave some insight into how the music was made. He said in the documentary “…Everyone thinks we have a mega studio with huge speakers but we are just ‘Hlanganisa’..” Hlanganisa is a zulu word literally translated as 'putting together'; This refers to creating something out of the few elements available to you “…Just like when you scrap the bottom of a pan to get some food out of it..” cited Mawbestana. 

The release features 14 tracks showcasing different and new music from Durban  - spanning Core Tribe through Sgubhu to Gqom. The 90 minute tape will consist of two sides, with Side A containing seven tracks and Side B containing a continuous mix and a digital download code granting access to the entire compilation. 

The tape will be release in ‘package’ format designed by Crudo Volta alongside a photography book with the best pictures from the trip to Durban by Tommaso Cas-sinis, a limited edition t-shirt and access to an online premiere of the documentary.

Premiere: Dominowe 'Darbuka Tribe (Tribe Dance)'

Head of the Gqom Oh! label, Nan Kolè has been undertaking a massive project over the past few months. Allying with Rome-based radio station Crudo Volta, Kolè has been travelling around South Africa, and Durban in particular, to investigate the various shades of Gqom that are gradually emerging. For many of these artists, the resultant Woza mixtape and the accompanying documentary are their first chance at exposure outside of the country. It's also an opportunity to contextualise Gqom and educate the rest of the world about the culture as a whole. Crafting a balance of the biggest hitters in the scene, the biggest tracks and those most representative of the sound and its scene must have been a difficult tightrope to walk. One of our favourites—and it really was tough to pick just one—was "Cruel Drumz", a dubby example of the gritty, minimal, bass-heavy sound of Gqom by Cruel Boyz (whose "Touch It" we premiered last year).
