     Carlos Escalante Macaya was born in Barcelona, Spain. Son of costarrican parents, he took their nationality from an early age. He studied music at the Escuela de Artes Musicales of the University of Costa Rica with Luis Diego Herra, Benjamín Gutiérrez and Ph.D. Bernal Flores.
      In 1992 while he was still an undergrad student he won 2nd place in the “Certamen Permanente Centroamericano15 de setiembre" with the piece “Sonata for violín and piano”, a few years latter the costarrican National Lyric Company, produced his first Opera “Nosotros dos” with a libretto by Carlos Tapia. The following year Carlos Escalante travels to Mexico City where he studies Advanced Composition courses with Italian composer Franco Donation. In 1999 he travels to Madrid where he undertook studies of Music Technology with the Spanish composer Adolfo Nunez.
     Carlos Escalante Macaya has written orchestral music as well as chamber music, Choral music, film scoring, and a large amount of Dance and stage music with most of the theater and Dance companies in Costa Rica. He has been awarded “Best incidental music composer” by the Costarrican Composers Asociation in two different occations: 2004 and 2010, and “Best soundtrack” by the 18th edition of the National Film Festival en 2010. In 1997 his “Sinfonía Centenario” was chossen among several orchestral pieces from eleven different countries to be the commemorative Symphony of the 100-year anniversary of the National Theater Of Costa Rica.
    In 2000 Escalante Macaya moves to Cape Town South Africa, to do his post-graduate studies with Peter Klatzow, a former student of the renowned french composer Nadia Boulanger. The next few years, while studding in the South-African College of Music, Escalante writes music for local chamber music ensembles and choirs, and does some field research in the neighboring countries.
