It's sunshine time again. The time when we need a new D&B soundtrack to score our festivals, carnivals, pool parties and barbecues. And you'd struggle to find anyone better qualified to curate that soundtrack than Technique's bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith. Just a quick glance at their immense back catalogue of anthemic releases or their packed international bookings diary is enough to demonstrate that they know exactly how to bring those summertime vibes.

Things kick off in suitably monumental fashion with a cut from the head honchos themselves, “I Need Somebody”. If you were looking out from a festival stage at a sea of excited hands in the air, this tune's searing vocal hook and unrelenting waves of bass would suit that scene perfectly. And, of course, this album contains a lethal dosage of similarly colossal tracks. For example, MaxNRG enlists a quirky vocal from Marianna to boost the hype-levels on “Headshot” and recent signing Kronology delivers the driving and euphoric “Untouchable”. Plus, there are some sizeable contributions to the big-room roll call from a few names you won't have seen on Technique before, like Oder's “Closer” and T-Phonic & Deadman's “Show Me the Way”.

But summer's not all about the shades-on daytime raving, we need some choice sunset material too for when things get a little darker. Document One and Spectrem exemplify this beautifully with the laid-back and jazzy “Falling” and the Kyphosis-laced “Fade” respectively. Helsinki's liquid maestros LAOS pass through to drop “City Lights” and “Belong”, and Tantrum Desire treats us to the effervescent “Sea Breeze”. For when things get darker still, there are tracks like the technoid, percussive world-unto-itself of Salaryman & Dark Machine's “Night Shift”. Guys like Conspire and Brian Brainstorm bring some full-on jungle, and the whole compilation is peppered with alternative sounds like Digital's dub workout “Groove Together”.

The thirty-one tracks here represent a cross-section of the mighty, multi-stranded, multi-form D&B scene and what it can do for summer 2015. There are names you'll know and names you might not know yet. There are huge mainstream anthems and shadow-bound subtleties. There are tunes for midday and tunes for four in the morning. And for four in the afternoon the next day. Ultimately, this isn't the sound of the summer, this is all the many different sounds of the summer put together on one album. So, the soundtrack's sorted, time to go out and have a summertime that's worthy of it!

Following a year that saw the label launch in a big way, COMANCHE kick 2016 off by reaching to the stars with Spanish producers PICOTA & KUMBH and their ALPHA CENTAURO EP. ALPHA CENTAURO opens with entrancing sci-fi pads that easily evoke the vastness of space, before dropping into a bleak and edgy breakbeat assault backed by scarce cinematic elements. CONVICTION opens on an eerie note, drenched in reverb and strings with sinister attitude before smashing into activity with a rowdy bassline that’ll undoubtedly get the crowd moving. KING’S CAVE evokes horror soundtracks of old with a piano-led opening that makes way for a shifty roller with an oldschool edge.

Picota & Kumbh make a strong debut on Comanche, with more to be expected from this duo on the label in future. Agressor Bunx have been setting the standard recently. Whether it's on seminal drum & bass imprint Ram Records, or the underground torch holder Eatbrain, they've settled themselves within the discography of every major label running the game. And they're about to return with four fresh cuts which bring some serious heat, once again platforming the cut throat sound which has made them so infamous.

‘The Curse' EP, out on innovative imprint Ignescent Recordings, stands as both a pivotal release for both artist and label. Founded in 2015, they're beginning to push their way into a league with the heavyweights and with the help of Agressor Bunx, it's not difficult to see why. Already making their mark with Ukrainian underground figures such as NickBee, Ignescent have slowly been refining their sound; this next title proves their stature.

Title-track ‘The Curse' throws you synapses first through a wormhole of fury, featuring a soundtrack of mean bass and crispy drums. With a hook that grabs you on first listen, it accelerates during the intro before allowing you to freefall through constructed chaos. Dirty, dark and filled with neurofunk vibes, it exposes a production standard which has ensured their notoriety.

Next up, ‘Scream' shadows the same pattern, cranking up the gears and taking you into even shadier depths. However, instead throwing out an incessant hook, its thrashing drum patterns drag you through an arrangement heightened by each break. Agressor Bunx punches through to your musical receptors, taking them hostage and leaving you unable to escape their grasp.

Reminiscing on the older times, ‘Déjà vu' follows suit. Steeped in jungle-esque breakdowns, it's different from the vast range of production they've showcased. With precise form, they hit again and again with seismic results. Growling reeses pedal you even further into the fire, letting their deadly intentions take hold.

And finally, comes ‘Overwatch'… Its stabs and blaring subs stand out clearly, gradually building a foundation of infallible weight. They revert yet again to a style which reciprocates the old school, showing that despite their contemporary reign over neuro, they're also well read on their history. It's this background which has enabled them to surge forward, a movement which isn't looking to be stopped anytime soon.
