L'Aldila' (The Beyond)



In the the three years since I posted my first Halloween mix, the soundtrack reissue world has ballooned considerably; New cult soundtrack collectors— particularly of scores in the horror mold, as they seem to have the geekiest and most rabid fans— can seldom keep up with the output of releases from the dream-houses Finders Keepers, Death Waltz Recording Co, Waxworks, and Mondo, among others. What began as a playlist meant to help spread the word about some specific recent releases by these awesome companies (all of whom go out of their way to curate and produce excellent artwork and designs, I might add), that goal revealed itself as far too ambitious and yielded instead a hodgepodge, kitchen-sink playlist thrown together just in the knick of time for Halloween. These are some favorite moody or spooky tracks I’ve picked up over the past few years, each a door to some mysterious and international cinematic gem worth further exploration. There’s something here for everyone, from Italian prog and disco to lone organs and bedroom keyboards, French and Czech orchestrations and Polish jazz, and a number of pieces that have influenced each other over time in a shared and sometimes overtly referential filmic dreamscape. Oh and I threw this together with somewhat of a time-based flow; one might ideally start this in the late afternoon sun on an autumn drive, and follow it intermittently through the gloaming and into the darkness of night, even into the first light of a wintery morning. Thanks and shoutouts to the awesome aforementioned labels that have reissued many of these scores, all of whom deserve the support of anyone interested in these musics. Special thanks to Andy Votel, the Willy Wonka of European cult soundtracks who seems to be going particularly after my heart in all that he does at Finders Keepers records.
