This weeks Source to Cycle comes from another great Chilean talent, Alfonso León.  A regular DJ this year in Ibiza at the Luciano & Friends parties at Ushuaia, and at Vagabundos, and also a hot production talent, with releases on Memento and It’s All In You, Alfonso delivers a superb selection.
 
The Source selection takes in an eclectic blend of music from Daft Punk and Kraftwerk to Deep Purple and Iron Maiden, whilst on the Cycle mix, Alfonso flexes his deck skills with stella music from the likes of Ryan Crosson, Peace Division and Kevin Griffiths, with a couple of Alfonso's own forthcoming production too! In the mid-90's, he was promoting Sense Club and Encuentros con la Technocultura in Santiago de Chile in the company of many initiators of the Latin American electronic music scene: Senor Coconut AKA Atom Heart, Ricardo Villalobos, Dandy Jack and brother Adrian Schopf, Washington Miranda, Argenix Brito, Microman etc.

He's played radio stations and DJed clubs and events in Santiago and Latin America, Germany, Spain and Holland, settling in Switzerland in 2000 to release on Mental Groove Records in Geneva, where he also holds a residency at the Weetamix club. His releases appear on the Transmat, Perlon, Lo-Fi Stereo, Bruchstuecke and Klang Elektronik record labels.

Luciano's mixed Swiss and Chilean identity shows in his music, a somewhat mystical blend of deep techno and electro that integrates southern elements in rhythms and colorful patterns in sound. His collaborations with Ricardo Villalobos (Playhouse, Perlon, Warp, Force Inc etc.) as Sense Club are especially rewarding, as is his partnership with Pier Bucci and Argenix Brito as Monne Automne.

Mellowing his style as times goes by, getting more experimental and spacey with a fresh style of his own, Luciano’s production is destined to the wiser dancefloors that have enjoyed his live sets in Peru, Chile, Argentina, the U.S., Spain, Germany and Switzerland. DJ-wise, Luciano’s trade relies on groovy and minimal.

Mendo means it when he says, “Music is the most important thing in my life.” The striking new star of the Cadenza crew has devoted 18 years of his life to dance music – and he is bursting with enthusiasm for the next 18.

Born in Geneva to Spanish parents, Mendo’s first encounter with electronic music was through pirate radio. Fascinated, he borrowed some music gear. Then his mother bought him Technotronic’s “Pump Up The Jam” and he was on his way to becoming a DJ. Inspired by US house stars like Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez and Masters At Work, Mendo quickly developed a flair for sexy, pulsating house that caught the ear of legendary Miami-based producer George Morel, who signed Mendo to Groove Records for tracks including, “Everybody I Got Him,” “Do It,” “Never Mind,” “Move On,” and “Tell Me.” This led to releases for labels including, Get Physical, Rekids, Saved, Viva Music, Great Stuff, CR2 and Defected. Mendo also did remixes for his friend Chab’s Imago Records, and in 2003 he and Chab founded Clarisse Records. Mendo released a string of hits on Clarisse including “Play Me With Your Sound” which Roger Sanchez snapped up for Stealth Records.

Thanks to his tireless production work and infectious DJ sound Mendo reached all the right ears. Luciano was so impressed he signed “Remember” EP to Cadenza Records in 2009 and “Encantos” EP in 2010. This was the beginning of an exciting collaboration which has seen Mendo join the Vagabundos to ignite Pacha and Ushuaia in Ibiza. When he’s not running with the Cadenza crew, Mendo is globe-trotting to destinations as diverse as, Japan, South America, USA , Germany and UK, giving fans a chance to soak up his incredible four decks Traktor sets that blend the best of house, live sampling and techno futurism.

Mendo plays at some of the best clubs on the planet: Womb, Tokyo; Panoramabar, Berlin; Cielo, New York; and D-Edge in Sao Paulo. "The key to a successful party is to get girls dancing. Once they dance, everybody does,” Mendo says. “I just want people to have a good time with my music.”

Mendo is currently working on productions including “Stages of Life” EP for Cadenza, and has a packed DJ schedule. But he thrives on pressure. “It is exciting to produce a song, then play in front of thousands of people and make them hysterical,” he says. “DJing is the best job in the world.”

Dani Casarano was born in Morges, by Lake Geneva, near Lausanne, to Italian parents. At 12 years old, he was absorbing hip-hop and acid jazz. He also soaked in the sounds that resounded at home, which featured, among others, Italian composer Ennio Morricone. Taking his destiny into his own hands, at just 14, Dani was inspired by house music and invested in Technics turntables. He also took guitar lessons and learnt musical notation. After leaving school, which he attended with Luciano, he decided to take the trip of a lifetime. The year was 1997 and the country he chose, after receiving an invitation from long-time compadre Luciano, was Chile. Magical, metaphysical, and volcanic, it was not unlike the rolling grooves that he loved and played. And it was here that he first met Ricardo Villalobos, Dandy Jack and Argenis Brito.

Dani soon began making his own productions, a servant to a universal groove. Always approaching electronic music with organic and acoustic elements. Always adapting to new places, faces, ideas and seasonal flavours. Yet always preserving the story and soul of the dance, the foundations of the scene. His debut was a CD album entitled In Transit 8 Track, which he wrote and produced under the alias Tony Mass, released on South American label Sum Records. He also contributed a single called ‘Break Sense’ to the Love Parade Santiago – Chile 2005 compilation on BMG. His first track to land on his beloved vinyl was ‘Oiseaux Sans Ailes’, produced with Ernesto Albacete (Ernie), which came out on Spanish label Deep Explorer in 2006. He then produced the techy, synth-heavy ‘El Zapo Hablo’; ‘the toad speaks’ being a Chilean expression for when everyone knows a secret about you. This was released in 2006 on Germany’s Connaisseur Supérieur, thereby the ‘undisclosed’ became self-evident: the man may be modest but his music was now speaking for itself.

UNER is one of the most important names of the new generation of Spanish electronic music producers. His musical training allowed him to develop at a very early age a different dance music concept, based on the pleasure for harmony and the search for a unique, personal sound. This has lead him to edit for labels like Diynamic (where he's an active member and has edited his most celebrated works to date, "Raw Sweat" and "Bassboot"), 2020 Vision, Get Physical, Defected or CR2 to mention a few. UNER has earned the respect of the music industry with talent and work: names like Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox or Luciano play his music on a regular basis; clubs like Berlin's Watergate or Space ibiza book him oftenly and his number of fans increases by the day; all of this because of what he does best, his music.

Apart from traveling around the world as a Dj, in 2011 UNER presented his live gigs, an audiovisual concept in which he uses state-of-the-art software and hardware (from iPads to mini midi keyboards) to explore his most solid, personal side. The artistic expansion of the Catalonian producer will go on during the following months with the creation of several artist albums where he'll express his way of understanding electronic music from a musical point of view and from the center of the dancefloor. UNER's bound to reach higher tops with the only limit of his music... so there's still loads to see, listen and dance.

Lee Van Dowski: The very name exudes style and intrigue—a country lord, perhaps, who at night throws open the manor gates to host all-night bacchanals legendary for their wine and song.

And though the French-born, Geneva-based artist may not have a manor to his name, the rest isn't far off the mark. Born Renaud Lewandowski, Lee has earned a reputation as a kind of dark prince of uplifting electronic music—a trickster who spreads his mischief via long, undulating DJ sets and bewilderingly funky releases. And he's done this in a remarkably short span of time. In 2004, he and Philippe Quenum released the well-received "Extension"/"Oregon" single for Luciano's Cadenza label; since then Lee has gone on to unleash a deluge of material on labels like Mental Groove, Bpitch Control, Dumb Unit, Einmaleins, Memo, Plak, Defrag Sound Processing, Mobilee, Leena, Wagon Repair, Soma (where Lee and Quenum also released their collaborative album, As Told On The Eve Of…) and still more. He's a regular fixture at some of the world's most celebrated nightclubs— Panorama Bar, Weetamix, Goa, Rex Club, D edge, The Arches etc…and even more celebrated afters. And as the director of two labels—Num, alongside Quenum, and 60Sec, with Agnès—he's released dozens of records from the likes of Butane, Mike Shannon, Alex Attias, Exercise one, Pan Pot, Dario Zenker and many more.

The brains behind mobilee records recognize talent when they hear it and while making his rounds on the international dance circuit last year, the Berlin imprint pulled Amsterdam native, David Labeij out of the limelight and warmly invited him to release the 86th catalog number titled "Crazy Love". Just one year after his first mobilee release, he's back with a digital-only, 4-tracker under the mobilee103 heading. 

A late joiner in the world of electronic music, the Dutchman unpacked his first set of tables in the late 1990s and subsequently began producing in 2001. Quick to catch up in the game, Labeij created a name for himself in the local scene with his signature hypnotic grooves and his technical expertise. 

The curtain rises with "AEM", a consistent minimal baseline with distant vocals woven in and out of quirky drum beats and percussion stone skipping across the surface. 

Next in line is "Rolling Back". Keyboard strokes foster tender vocals as the volume ascends to a bold peak ultimately relieved by a mix of spellbinding samples and scattered grooves. 

"Pourfact" unravels with rhythmic strings collecting spacey samples, in-sync claps and waves of familiar sound elements along its path. 

Finishing off the set is "Twisky", a staggering circle of mixed thuds, taps, rolls and mahogany beats eventually adopting a rhythmic dance tune carried over the hidden baseline. 

With artists like Labeij cranking out unique releases, mobilee lovingly packages the delight for even the label's fine tasters.

Following on from 2012's huge Palua EP, UNER returns to Cadenza Records in May with a brand new EP.  Featuring two tracks (and a bonus digital track), the 'Nagual EP' delivers once more, with UNER very much at the top of his game.  

'Bonheur (Part 1)' is a definate 'journey' track, spreading itself out over 12 minutes with a booming yet sophisticated tribal rhythm, and infectious melody line and light keys that worms around the rhythm, ticking all the right boxes for a modern day house record.

On the flip, 'La Playa (Part 2)' maintains the energy levels, with a bright and urgent rhythm track, with gliding and random keys, percussive effects and melting synths all jostling for position, its discordancy creating the intensity and mood of this piece.

*C-Rock & Patrick Kunkel* are *"Waiting For Nina"*. These two fellows from Frankfurt are on the scene since quite a while and both developed within the outer realms of Sven Väth´s Cocoon Universe.

Their debut ep on Leena brings back a classic groove monster inspired by early basic channel, mood2swing beats and tooped with some up to date rave signals to heat up the summer season. "Waiting For Nina" is coming in three version to have it right for each time of the day!
