"In dark hues" encompasses some of our darkest thoughts and feelings, those we cannot face and thwart. Most of the time, those thoughts and feelings lie quietly in the back of our heads until they finally swell and overcome us before they slowly fade away again: anxiety, bitterness, and anguish.
