At Innerstate Music Group (formerly Innerstate Records) our approach to Producing music is a little different than most major record labels. We focus on three guiding principles: 1) Timbre, 2) Inflection, and 3) Key. While most major Labels will rely heavily on auto tuning / pitch correction to put you "in Key," we take a slightly different approach. After partnering with Audio Kite Research and Yale Research to study thousands of crowd sourced reviews from 2019 - 2021, we noticed one thing in common. Most of the negative critiques were related to singers / vocalists. Reviewers either commented on the singers being out of tune / not in key or that there was too much auto tune / pitch correction applied. Especially nowadays Producers have been relying more and more on software to edit the vocals, which is evident in almost every Indie song being pushed. The simple fact is that it's easier and cheaper to edit a vocal stem rather than create a whole new song. We discovered that in 99% of all songs submitted to AudioKite Research and Yale Insights there was another Key and beat hidden within each song. Our goal at IMG is to discover that hidden melody and compose a score around it that will be unlike anything you've ever heard before. We decided to make that our competitive advantage because at IMG, "instead of changing you for the music, we change the music for you."

Matt Michael is a singer-songwriter currently based in Portland, OR from Syracuse, NY.  He performs story telling alt/punk styles of music influenced by sounds from the 90's and 2000s. His songs tell stories and share feelings from experiences of his youth, time spent traveling the world and observation of the modern human condition. Interesting themes found in his music range everywhere from mental health to navigating life, love and loss.
