Resurrecting the Automaton

Written for my youngest daughter Rachel a few years ago, it explores the smooth jazz format using the Godin Encore nylon string guitar.  Annie Smart heard it, loved it, and asked to collaborate on it.  Her additions of vocals and piano are wonderful, artistic, and insightful; so good that I had to incorporate some of her lovely additions in the instrumental track. A soundscape with no words.

Ihes egin is a verb in basque language that literally means "to do the escape". Therefore, it implies an action, not a process. An action you're comitted to. There's no chance of going back, it's visceral, it's an impiulse born in the guts. And often, it does not end well.

Ihes Egingo Dugu (We Will Run Away)

I think this track started 2 years ago. I remember talking about the vision with Jamie on the phone and then Jamie sent me a bunch of stems to choose from. I chose the standing bass and recorded my verse with a 90’s vibe in mind. I sent the track over to Russell to add some guitars, he sent that funk rock intro and riff back, and then I don’t know what happened after that? A bunch of other songs got made and the vision for this track expanded to include cutting my second verse and bringing Jon Lock in on vocals. Then the song sat again. Jon and I even started and completed And So You Say and Training Day after we had already got this song started. Since this track was visioned to be part of the first song on the set with Training Day, eventually it had to be completed. Wou-Wou then join in with his synths, rhythm guitar over Jon’s part, and some additional guitar over the first section. This gave the track the final fire it needed and Russell mixed and mastered it like a champ!

As always, massive thanks to Wou-Wou and Russell who have been regular collaborators on so many projects, on SoundCloud, Facebook, and Bandcamp. Wou and Russell will always be the core of my musical team. Thanks for being great friends! 
Big thanks also to Jon, who I have worked with on 3 songs now, with 2 more in the works already! 
And thanks to Jamie for all his patience, support, and for the completion of our second project together!

There are so many great musicians on SoundCloud, I wish I could make music with everyone of you. I often reflect on all the great music you have all made, how we are constantly making new songs (because that is what artist do), and how many of our great creations can easily get forgotten. Most of our songs don’t get a chance to live like those songs that get repeated on the radio. And while many of us probably don’t like mainstream radio, many of us would probably like our best songs to have a bigger life, or at least shine a little brighter and be remembered a little longer. As a way to breathe additional air into one of our community members older music, I selected 5 tracks from Hot Os discography and remixed them to make “Twenty Twelve”

The challenge was to compose a short soundtrack for the painting “Nighthawks”, by Edward Hopper. My take was the barman dropping a glass and lightening the mood.
