DOWNSTEREO and The Gramophone have collaborated for two years past, organizing an event that celebrates the life and work of a pioneer in music, “The King Of Beats,” James Yancey aka J Dilla. In 2006, we lost James Yancey to lupus at the age of 32. In this our third year, we will again donate proceeds of the show to the Lupus Foundation – Heartland Chapter, who will advance the science and medicine of lupus to find a cure and improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus. In his short lifetime, Jay Dee was a rapper and producer out of Detroit, Michigan. He emerged quickly from the mid 90’s underground hip-hop scene to become one of the industry’s most influencial hip-hop artists, working with acts like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Erykah Badu, MF Doom, The Pharcyde, Common, and Madlib. This annual performance is not just an evening of hip-hop, but an important event for our community. 

Having Bare Knuckle Music present the beat battle and evening’s introduction is an honor. It also helps keep alive a tradition that flourished in the idiom of Jazz, to showcase talents in a competitive way on the bandstand. The J Dilla tribute has helped to build a tradition for DOWNSTEREO to collaborate with a great number of artists that are inspired to pay homage to his diverse body of work. 

DOWNSTEREO is a sovereign nation. As a unit with nearly 20 years making music, they are bound by blood, sweat, and tears. Careful listening will reveal to you a secret that they exist to provide the answers. Each shall die before shaking the bond, curse, and joy that is inevitable.

Carving out a sound influenced by the likes of L.V. Johnson, Cris Williamson, Galt MacDermot, Bo Hansson, Billy Paul, and Giorgio Moroder; the group has played many styles and has no lack of motivation in continuing to listen, study, create, record, and perform. DOWNSTEREO utilizes live and sampled drums, analog synths, guitars, and both vintage and modern instruments to search negative space as they connect with their audience.

Members of the group have performed, recorded, or shared stages with other artists such as Dam-Funk (LA), George Clinton (Funkadelic), Gift Of Gab (Blackalicious), The Roots, Busta Rhymes, Pharrell Williams, Mobb Deep, Talib Kweli. EOTO, and Mux Mool. DOWNSTEREO forges onward towards their first music release with a prior collective discography among the members of over 35 studio records released to date.
