Mike'n'Kenny - In The Pocket (free download)

This session has so much personality to it musically. Since we are about to do  a massive and rare collaboration with Team Supreme, we thought it would be a good idea to get some of the guys from the TS crew to stop by, drop set, and promote this Tuesday's event (Team Supreme x Soulection Takeover @ The Echo - Tuesday, Aug. 20th). We hit up Colta and he brought Kenny Segal and Elos by to drop sets. All of these guys have so much experience and depth in the LA Beat Culture and beyond. Colta dropped a quick teaser of what's to come for Tuesday's event. Unfortunately, the live recording had some technical difficulties and Kenny/Elos' set couldn't be included! Very unfortunate, however we made sure to fill in their hour with solid selects to try and make up for their great set.

Aside of Colta, Kenny, and Elos, Joe Kay showcased brand new exclusive material from the gifted vocalist Jordan Rakei as well as Lakim who is getting close to featuring his next Soulection release! It’s truly apt that Raw Money Raps opens with Jeremiah Jae hazily reminiscing about awakening from an especially chimerical journey. After a kaleidoscopic grip of beat tapes, EPs and mixtapes that have sent wi-fi connections rumbling, as well as a move from windswept Chi-city to the home of his Brainfeeder crew in LA, Jae unveils his sprawling debut full-length release. More than just an album, this is an all-encompassing Pynchonian, Tumblr-feeding, social networked art-rap fever dream. A seismic collision of the analog and digital worlds makes for deceptively hooky beats that double as sonic rabbit-holes, all of which cradles Jae’s flow – which is a versatile instrument all it’s own, skipping from rapid, focused deliveries to surprising melodic sing-a-longs then chopped-and-screwed slump and stream of consciousness brainfloods.

To be a young producer and MC in 2012 is no easy task, however with style and substance in short order and internet democratization run-rampant, there’s arguably never been a better time for one to make their mark. Rather than jump headlong into the cresting 1990’s throwback revival, Jae develops tracks and lyrics that link technology and metaphysics in a defiantly contemporary way, flipping swag rap tropes on their head and reveals a penchant for affecting introspection. This singular approach to music is almost certainly a by-product of Jae’s split personality as a visual artist. Working in the context of fine art with paintings and collages as well as spreading into fashion design, Jae’s output aligns him with multi-media luminaries like the late, great Rammellzee.

Raw Money Raps’ first single, Money, is a where-did-my-cash-go-mid-afternoon summer jam for hot cloudy days ahead, accompanied by a suitably tweaked video directed by fellow renaissance man Flying Lotus. “Money” comes paired with another album standout in “Money and Food”, which takes trap rap’s unhinged synths and 808 kicks and filters them through Jae’s prism. Across it’s span, the album touches on fractured, cautionary headbangers (“Rover”), string-laden classicism (“Cat Fight”) and deeply psychedelic futurism (“Hercules Versus the Commune”) and in the process, ignites the brightest rising star of 2012. Prepare yourself for Jeremiah Jae’s journey.

Austin Peralta – “Endless Planets”

 

The next album forthcoming from Brainfeeder might, at first sight, appear to be something of a change in direction for the label but nothing could be further from the truth.

 

Austin Peralta is a jazz musician. Not in the sense that he or people close to him bandy around the word “jazz” (or even worse, “jazzy”) in relation to his music. No, in the sense of years of practice and dedication to a particular artform. In the sense of having played with, amongst many others, the likes of Chick Corea, Hank Jones and Ron Carter. In the sense of having serious chops. Of playing the piano and composing like a true veteran. And in the sense of having done all that by the time he’s twenty one. And that’s before you even get into his work as a session player for everyone from Erykah Badu to Shafiq Husayn, or the time he sat in with legendary LA big band, Horace Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan People’s Arkestra.

 

But, as Flying Lotus explains, “this is a step in direction of where I want Brainfeeder to go. True musicianship as well as some interesting electronics.” Peralta, another LA native and son of legendary Z-Boy skater and, latterly, documentary film-maker Stacy Peralta, in many ways fits clearly into what Brainfeeder has always been about, a combination of questing futurism and an understanding of where you’re coming from. So while Peralta works alongside serious jazz musicians like Zane Musa (alto sax), Ben Wendel (tenor and soprano), Hamilton Price (bass) and Zach Harmon (drums), he also relies on longtime friend and associate Strangeloop for electronic manipulation throughout the set and ends the album with a scintillating collaboration with The Cinematic Orchestra and singer Heidi Vogel.

 

“People would always tell me about this genius jazz pianist,” Flying Lotus recalls. “‘Hes like 17 or 18 and already sounds like Mccoy Tyner!’ I had to go and see what was up, so Strangeloop introduced me, and I got to hear this amazing record.” And once he’d heard it there was only one outcome. It is, after all, the Brainfeeder way. “We had to put it out.”

So this song originally started as a remix I did of my friend's band Spaceheater 6 or so years ago.  I was never super happy how it turned out, so more recently I had Mike Parvizi replay the bassline live on his acoustic.  I was still having trouble finishing up the track, and thats when Preston got involved.   Him and Mike proceeded to smack it up, flip it, and rub it down like only Penthouse knows how to do, and the rest is history.  This track is truly the definition of collaboration, and although it was a long journey to get here, I couldnt be happier about how it all turned out in the end <3<3<3 $ $ $ !!!!!
