"The two most powerful warriors are patience and time.”, one well-known writer once said. And for the new Birds entry, I welcome @philipp-otterbach, long-time record collector of all kinds of music, DJ and producer, who would approve his words. For a long while he devotes himself with endurance to music. During the 2000s, he threw some forward-looking dances with his old buddy Vladimir Ivkovic in the German Ruhr region. And when Düsseldorf’s shrine for outer-national grooves Salon Des Amateurs opened in 2004, Otterbach became a one of the first residents. Since 2014 he is also out there with his very own sound, releasing EPs on labels like adventurous Dutch Knekelhuis, Themes for Great Cities, Brokntoys etc. In 2020 he dropped his debut album 'Everything Else Matters' on R.I.O.  followed by "The Dahlem Diaries" on Music From Memory Nowadays (2023) and "Correct me if I am incorrectly you" on Offen (2023). Listening to one of Philipp's DJ sets is like shuffling through an imaginary library. His musical language follows an intertwined logic of emotional affects, ineffable magic and endless fantasy. A man for suspenseful storytelling that likes to melt early electronic music, Krautrock, minimalism, and all sorts of tribal rhythms with eclectic voodoo dance, psychedelic guitar tsunami’s, house, techno and electro - always beautifully entangled with a precise feeling for special funk dynamics. This one is another great example of these antics too. Let the mind fly with the birds!

After closing our recent event at 90mil for Slowfoam's album launch, André set about to capture the essence of his set and the evening into a new mix for us.

Reflecting back, it was truly special to see the coming together of such diverse social spheres and how quickly all was broken down in the atmosphere of Andre's music. At the core, his sets are a total celebration of life, an invitation to dance no matter how undanceable or mysterious the song. Music you’ve never heard becomes the music you’ve known all your life.

Across fluctuating tension and rhythm, all sorts of worlds intertwine… digi-dub morphs to acid to avant-folk in perfect harmony. But what stands out most is the pure admiration for DIY music; it’s the curation of a tender heart, finding the purest of souls in the strangest of music. 

Towards the close of this wonderful set, Laurie Anderson recalls ‘I remember where I came from, there were tropical breezes and a wide open sea, I remember my childhood, I remember being free.’ It’s a sentiment that embodies the experience of André music, an invitation to be utterly lost in the most beautiful ephemeral moment, that melancholy-tinged euphoria in the instant before it’s all over, stretched out for eternity.

Next up, welcome Sneaker DJ 👋 

His musical upbringing started out in the Detroit and Chicago space, before further influences like obscure Italo, new wave and minimal synth gems. He's based out of his part-time-hometowns Berlin and Dresden, where he operates the TailOut mastering studios with long-time collaborator Jacob Korn. We were first introduced to him via his impeccable edits on Deep Cover #8. In his own words:

"The mix was recorded for the Needsome radio show and was aired only once on Radio Dreyeckland, Freiburg/Germany.

The session is showcasing curation and craftsmanship that was developed on the fly without sync buttons or a defined order. The selection follows a pattern of progressive music - the majority from the 90s, from Detroit and all Western Europe. A vivid mental image of what Sneaker would have envisioned as the retro trend for 2024 unlike all that generic, shallow trance and gabba.

I had and even to this day have the feeling that my fellows in the radio studio didn't realise what they were witnessing. Despite my usual uncommon selections from a background of 30 years of digging, I played the obvious - even classics (you'll be surprised). These are - nevertheless -  unknown to the unknown.

I blended these tunes with dirty friction - cause I dare to play 3 decks. Harmonic mixing - cause I am not deaf unlike most DJs. If you are a selector (LOL) jerking off on your rotary - let me tell you straight to your face: you are lacking skilltalentandinspiration to add MUSICALITY. Cause yours is no art ... cause it lacks artistry!"

Pieter Kock aka DJ Peacock is one of the founding and guiding souls behind the Berlin-based bar/micro club O Tannenbaum. Musically active since 1986 as a singer, guitarist, drummer, and noise musician, he has released a string of albums under different aliases and in different shapes with De Fabriek, with Meeuw as Billie and Ballie, and as The Hitmachine and Taladu. Since the early 1990s, he has been narrating haunting sonic stories as a DJ, playing a vast palette of styles from tape culture to fusion, from balearic to jazz, modern and classical, cosmic, techno, mutant disco, weird pop music, folk, world tunes, ambient, music from the 4th dimension and so on.
