In answer to the questions I keep getting asked.
 ccai pt2 , part 1 is Drukqs, as that was the first thing I released that utilised computer controlled instruments, namely a modified Yamaha disklavier, 2nd gen and a couple of midi controlled solenoid based drum mechanisms I made just after I got the Disklavier.

I kept seeing them [disklaviers] in hotels, usually used to pipe muzak around the place and thought why doesn't anyone actually use one of these to compose music on and make beats etc! 
A couple of times when i saw them in hotel lobbies, i sneaked up to the disklavier and set it to play ultra low pitch and very slow, funny watching peoples reactions, it was down every corridor etc
NOBODY i spoke to back in around 1999 inc. people at yamaha knew how to connect one of these to a computer and I had to take my computer into Yamaha to try it out to see how fast these things could go, no info on the net then either.
The first year I burned out countless solenoids in the thing and learnt how to repair them myself, the more recent gen ones like I used at the barbican have temperature cut outs on them thankfully, i’ve still fried a few though!

Returning for our first release of 2015, we proudly to welcome Gamma back to Dispatch for his first Dispatch EP as a solo artist.

Having previously released on the label as part of the Spinline trio, Gamma brought the incredible “If U Go Away” to our Transit 2 compilation album and we knew it was only a matter of time before he would be back for a full release.

Taking us into the New Year, the Zion EP is comprised of five tracks that delve deep into the senses, remaining pensive, yet always hard hitting.

Title track ‘Zion’ sets the scene dramatically, with half time beats shuffling over subterranean low ends. Collaborating with Dispatch favourite Hydro, ‘3 Dayz’ follows on, raising the energy levels with suave overlapping bass grooves.

‘Streetheadz’ comes next, a percussive assault on the dancefloor, with strong support so far. ‘Midnight Heat’ contrasts the elements expertly, with sultry pads and soft vocals met by dark, growling mids and sharp stepping drum work.

‘Empathy Control’ closes the EP with a slice of pure robotic funk, with a refined bassline cutting below jittering mechanic entities. Key support on this release comes from the likes of Toddla T (on BBC Radio 1), Icicle, Kasra, DLR & Safire.

The sheer scope of the prospect of Ivy Lab music has only snowballed since the trio's release of 'Oblique' with Frank Carter III on Critical Music this time two years ago. Together the producers Stray, Sabre and Halogenix have hung their loose themes around different tempos creating an assortment of musics that veer from dewy eyed, ponderous drum & bass, to dance storming rollers, half time steppers and a new brace of low slung hip hop heeters. Testament to their individual skills, their combined ideas and touches seem to work on any level and at any pace as the clip we're here premiering of the forthcoming track 'Two By Two' only further demonstrates. 

Sounding more akin to the lurching kind of rap fodder that's been tumbling out of LA for a number of years now, we're both stoked and excited to announce that it'll be out as a digitally exclusive part of the forthcoming Twenty Questions EP with is due out on all the usual retail suspects this Monday. A respected member of the global techno elite, the FORMAT boss is kicking off 2015 in style, with the release of his 'Buffer' 12" via Drumcode on March 9th. Following that, Juan will be returning to FORMAT under his JSSL moniker, for the Constant Target EP, which includes a remix from Madrid's Kwartz.

Juan's mix takes us on a trip through the dark tunnels of the techno underground, building through peak time destroyers and returning us safely to minimal depths.

After two critically acclaimed volumes of their producer-driven compilation series Tempo Dreams, Brooklyn’s Bastard Jazz Recordings is back with Volume 3 of the beat-centric, forward looking concept. For this edition, the label has tapped Soul Clap, the Boston bred international ambassadors of all things funky.  Piloting their cosmic mothership all over the globe, Soul Clap have built a cult following worldwide both through their solo endevaors and via their Crew Love brand formed with Brooklyn’s Wolf+Lamb. Staying with the Tempo Dreams theme of showcasing new styles,  emerging artists and the best of their beatmaking  peers, Soul Clap has compiled a showcase of entirely unreleased modern funk, electro soul, and leftfield house music on this compilation, sure to make their spiritual guide Dr. Funkenstein aka George Clinton proud. 

As in with previous volumes, the featured artists all come from different places, spaces and times but are tied together by the musical connection running concurrent on the record. Soul Clap’s unmistakable vibe is powerfully  represented through their own original track “So Sedated”, a heavy chugging synth ode to the transformational powers of the dancefloor, featuring understated vocals by Dayonne Rollins.  Crew Love & Dirtybird artist Tanner Ross teams up with Jules Born for “No 1 Else But You”, a late night off-kilter piece of nasty funk, while fellow teammate Navid Izadi brings a Cali swagger with the smoothed out G-Funk vibes of “Cadillack”.  The left coast is further represented by Pasadena’s XL Middleton whose “AntiSlumper” kicks off the album with a throwback boogie excursion, while the George Clinton-approved production team FSQ delivers the irresistible down & dirty “Break The Funk”. Amsterdam artist Tom Trago comes in tough with the electro porn of “Hard Cash” while NYC is represented fully with disco hero Tom Noble’s “Tanked”,  Analog Player’s Society’s wavey “Enter City”, and Greg Paulus’s late night soul vibes on “Everything (Love Down)”.

Brawther is one of the most consistent and enjoyable producers in the game, taking his time to get it spot on each and every. His catalogue may not be vast, but it's all killer and no filler – and for those of you who weren't paying attention at the back, a cheat sheet is on its way. Endless is due soon on Chez Damier's sub-imprint Balance, a 3xLP compilation taking stock of Brawther's releases thus far. Oh, plus an as-yet-unheard cut for good measure: this one right here.

Brawther's dub of "Khawuleza" retains the groove and wholesome vibe, but leaves only the faintest trace of the vocals intact, letting Vusa Mkhaya float between the skippy, sticky, squelchy filter. It's warm house music par excellence; where the balmy original felt kissed by afternoon sun, this dub is a fast-forward to that special place at the end of the party where day is breaking anew, full of promise.

In March 2007 I received an email from Justin Crawford (aka Justin Unabomber), who, along with DJ partner Luke Cowdrey (aka Luke Unabomber), was busy putting the finishing touches to their Elektons album ‘Red Light, Don’t Stop’, which would be issued later that year via Wall Of Sound / PIAS. Justin told me about an idea he had for me to put together a DJ only ‘party mash up’ of ‘Get Up’, the first single from the album.

I was more than happy to take it on - as you’re no doubt aware, I have massive respect for the Unabombers and their seminal Electric Chair parties at the Music Box in Manchester, which can be counted amongst the most influential British club nights of the last twenty years. The monthly events finally came to an end in January 2008, having originally kicked off in 1995, and I was fortunate enough to make a number of memorable Chair appearances at the Music Box, and other related gatherings both in Manchester and London, following my debut there in February 2005.

I got all the parts sent over and set about rebuilding the track, retaining some sections of vocal and speeding it up from around 100bpm to 110bpm, which sat better for my purposes. With carte blanche to sample whatever I liked, given that this wouldn’t be made commercially available, I had what might be called a field day. Listen closely (or not so closely) and you’ll hear a whole host of sources, including Marvin Gaye, Ladies Choice, Led Zepplin, James Brown, Missy Elliot, Chic, Public Enemy, Symarip, Michael Jackson, Brass Construction, Madness, The Doors and Ednah Holt; even Shrek got in on the act. I’d also switch from the original backing during the mid-section of the mix, dropping into the groove of the great mid-70’s Funk favourite, ‘Hollywood Swinging’ by Kool & The Gang, a change which generally provokes a noticeable surge of energy from the dancefloor.

It was a really buzzy thing to work on. I can certainly hear the playfulness in there as I trade the samples off against each other, vibing on the groove and creating tension. I suppose I approached it as a mini-epic, if that makes sense, with a few familiar faces popping up along the way to join the fun.
