Empathy Test return for 2017 with their new EP ‘By My Side’. With echoes of CHVRCHES and Purity Ring, the enigmatic duo have impressed with their brooding electro sound; winning critical praise and a legion of dedicated fans worldwide. Empathy Test evoke a cinematic appeal with their songwriting and showcase an ability to transform the mundane into something beautiful and tragic. This partly stems from their inspiration by sci-fi worlds. Isaac Howlett and Adam Relf formed Empathy Test after discovering a mutual love of eighties sci-fi soundtracks and underground dance and indie music, with the name Empathy Test being taken from the film Blade Runner.

The new EP follows last year’s stunning ‘Demons / Seeing Stars’ release, and only adds further intrigue to their forthcoming debut album. The EP’s eponymous opener explores the emotions of desire within a dysfunctional relationship when all avenues of reconciliation have been exhausted. The listener is initially lulled into a false sense of security; with it’s serene synths and snaps twinned with more emotive lyrics of throwing “another lover on the fire”. The track swells until the soaring chorus perfectly balances the yearning sentiment of the lyrics “Don’t you wanna be by my side?”

If ‘By My Side’ represents the trauma of the EP, then ‘Vampire Town is the emotional light at the end of the tunnel, and conveys a sense of healing. The spacious washes and haunting vocals throughout the EP integrate to form an overall sense of darkness and mystery; and ultimately tell a story of longing, regret and, finally, acceptance. It’s a method that captures the duo’s strength and goes straight for the jugular. Empathy Test are renowned for captivating their live audiences with their branded mix of analogue synth sounds and eighties pop beats; and are playing upcoming shows and festival appearances around Europe - including Electronic Winter (Gothenburg, 28/1/17), Synth Pop Goes Berlin (Berlin, 17/2/17), and Amphi (Cologne, 22/7/17). Unknown to most, Gothenburg trio Emmecosta are all from a small town in Italy called Positano. After residing, recording and releasing all of their music in Sweden for the last seven years, the band consider themselves Swedish nationals but haven’t forgotten their roots, with new single ‘Miguel’ they aim to build on the Swedish/Italian connection.

Described quite brilliantly be Clash Magazine as “post-club tropical indie soul”, the bands debut EP garnered support from other hipster tastemakers Noisey and Complex, followed up by last years single ‘His Power Of Youth’ leading Stereogum to compliment their awareness of space in production, citing “they have a deft touch that goes each element room to breathe.” Envisage James Blake’s sonic usage of space with the production and songwriting worthy of a seat alongside Gold Panda, Belgrave and NOVAA; Emmecosta could fit right into London’s Bass scene.

‘Miguel’ is a story about a man and his own land portrayed by the delicate deliverance in Emmecosta’s music. There is a hidden romantic darkness in the actual story, which represents the bands melancholy in relation to their hometown in Italy, and what it was been like to immigrate to Sweden. There is a craving for home, yet acceptance of new belonging.

Emmecosta further this:
"’Miguel’ is a part of us that we have left in Italy. It's the son, grown up, of our past.  We look after him, we look at him, but from the North.  The song is about Miguel, the exponential image of our roots."

Calum Foad is a 25-year-old synth-pop artist, hailing from Reading (UK), who has been singing and playing guitar since childhood. Calum quickly developed industry support, writing and recording on both sides of the Atlantic, with producers such as Dan Weller (Enter Shikari, Nina Nesbitt) and grammy nominated Marc McClusky (Weezer, Motion City Soundtrack) - subsequently releasing songs such as ‘You & I’ and ‘Rollercoaster’, and carving out an 80s fuelled synth-driven sound in line with his long standing affinity for the music of that decade. 

Following a successful stint at the start of 2020 writing and recording in LA with producer Nate Merchant (Jason Derulo, Flo Rida, Sam Martin), he returned with a clutch of captivating new songs. Calum is now set to release via his own imprint label ‘Lil Bear Records’, licensed to label services provider ‘MTX’, kicking off on May 29th with the uplifting “Hope”, which, despite being written 4 years prior, gains extra resonance at this time.
