The Mixtape 46: Damba

Set against a backdrop of the dreamy mountains of Labëria in southern Albania, Washed by the Moon, British/German filmmaker Dan Shutt’s directorial debut, is a rich journey through the region’s musical history.

Ahead of the film's premiere on 13 September at Calvert 22 Foundation, we invited Dan Shutt to compile a mix that best encapsulates the Albanian tradition of polyphonic singing.

Monotronique is an Ukrainian producer and DJ from Kharkiv (UA). His production is characterized by a distorted minimalistic vibe with a bass music inuence. From heavy basses and 2step-like drums to ambiance landscapes and electro beats. In his performances he is able to amalgamate pure and raw passion with a textbook technique; this combination is also what is behind his prolic production. Previously released on Opal Tapes and Shared Meanings among other labels, Monotronique debuts on Hyperboloid Records with 'MAAAAAAAD' 
 
In this album Monotronique was interested in a new kind of sound and focusing on creation of specific atmosphere inside.the sound. MAAAAAAAD is based on different sides of bass music with detours through dance-hall and house. When put together all genres mutate and interconnect into funny and mad atmosphere, hence the title of the album. Monotronique wanted to achieve this with synths and a certain way of mixing  tracks, adding to the final mix a kind of a "wet" sound. A special effect as if you were listening to the music in a room full of toys, balls and balloons, a sonic journey to the amusement park.

Underpass #39 - Phorme

She falls down  into a dark prostration, which takes her away very deeply. In the depth of substance she makes her way, falls many times, with each moment it is harder to rise, but the desire to fight outweighs. Estrangement from the world swallows, sadness burns her , and disappointment pulls only deeper down. In the darkness, she still tries to continue radiating her usual Light to others, but It began to go out quickly. She goes till the end, hung with layered injuries, soaked in aggression on herself from the fact that for so long she can not find the way out. Desire and perseverance are growing. Faith is strengthened. The feeling of coming out from the black side of the mind  is nearby, but often it was deceptive. Now it's true. Through the crumpled darkness, a familiar Light indescribably breaks through, she recognizes It. Reaching for It. It’s with her. She's in the end. Not believing in it, she stopped and looked back. Thanking this dark and difficult path, she went forward, already continuously emitting her Light, which people so missed.

And "she" is me.

~ "КОНТУР СС - это сольный проект основанный в 2016 году музыкантом из Санкт Петербурга (РФ), основатель проекта Сергей Середа исследует мультижанровые формы и стили в музыке, вносит изменения в базовые классические конструкции, пытаясь освежить и обновить классические схемы сборки у жанровых композиций и этот альбом посвящен звуковому шумовому шипению и его взаимодействию с различными ритмами, где сами ритмы собираются в хаотичном порядке и не только из привычных звуков драм машин но и очень коротких звуковых отрезках: таких как шум улиц, щелканье винила, шипение кассет, природы и других шумовых записей. Многие звуковые дорожки пропущены через vst эффекты, что придаёт им цифровой модульный антураж. Также были использованы vst синтезаторы для пэдов и различных фоновых решений. ~ "КОНТУР СС is a solo project founded in 2016 by a musician from St. Petersburg (RF), the founder of the project, Sergey Sereda, explores multi-genre forms and styles in music, makes changes to the basic classical designs, trying to refresh and update the classic assembly schemes for genre compositions and this album is dedicated to sonic noise hiss and its interaction with various rhythms, where the rhythms themselves are collected in a chaotic manner and not only from the usual sounds of drum machines but also very short audio segments: such as the noise of the streets, the clicking of vinyl, hiss of cassettes, nature and other noise. Many soundtracks were passed through vst effects, which gives them a digital modular ambience. Also, vst synthesizers were used for pads and various background solutions.
