An exploration of warped, dream-like atmosphere and taught, noise-ingrained electronics, Paper Dollhouse has evolved from the solo work of Astrud Steehouder into an expansive, cinematic project now involving visual/performance artist Nina Bosnic. Recorded with a stronger focus on electronic processes and with a deeper, light-starved aesthetic, Aeonflower’s emboldened use of crushed-noise dynamics takes the London-based group’s debut “A Box Painted Black” (2011, Bird/Finders Keepers) frame into darker, murkier and more thrilling territory.

Aeonflower is the slow decent of a newly-discorporated spirit into a fogged, neon-lagoon, a drowned world still-lit. On this outing both artists’ vocals are expressive, forgoing complex lyrical concerns for minimal text invested with emotive power. If the first LP was a box of raw secrets with hints of obscured folk roots, Aeonflower is the endless rain of expression, experience and change. Nocturnal opener Oracle bleeds into Stand, the first of Steehouder’s haunted vocal takes, a minimal ballad augmented with a barren guitar line. Helios sees a drum-machine kick + ride cymbal pin down an ambient, enveloping vocal duet until Psyche obliterates it all with a harsh noise swell, a thrilling shock to the system. The swirling synths and emotion of Your Heart peak in the centerpiece Diane, a piece benefiting from Steehouder’s minimalist approach. Side 2 of the LP acts as a mini-suite, with Diamanda Galas-inspired vocal abstractions and walls of too coming down with stand-out ambient track Black Flowers. Dark and light interplay beautifully on album closer Siren, a turbulent if ambiguous build -up of harmony and noise. A cinematic portrayal of an internal hinterland, Aeonflower is a complete, encompassing soundworld.pap

Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen release exclusive 12” for Record Store Day 2015 featuring remixes by Dauwd and Lubomyr Melnyk

After releasing their debut album of unique Nordic electronic sounds in late 2014, Kiasmos – made up of Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen – return with a special 3-track EP featuring album highlight ‘Looped’ and remixes of album tracks ‘Held’ and ‘Burnt’.

Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, the title track ‘Looped’ was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesizers, drum machines and tape delays. It also features Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable tune.

UK electronic producer Dauwd (Kompakt/Ghostly), who Kiasmos specially selected to perform at their sold out London album release show as well as remix their track, has crafted a chilled club version of ‘Held’. Whilst Ukrainian pianist and fellow Erased Tapes artist Lubomyr Melnyk has created a unique re-interpretation of ‘Burnt’ in his signature “Continuous Music” mode, performed on two pianos.

 “It was an honour to be asked to remix an artist for Erased Tapes. Both the label and the artists I admire. And it was such a pleasure to work with the source material from Kiasmos. The parts had so much texture and warmth that working with them in my own space was quite inspiring.  I tried to respond impulsively to the parts and allow anything to happen. I think I achieved something with a balance of the original vibe and looking in another direction.” – Dauwd

 “I really enjoy the music of Ólafur and Janus. And this was a wonderful opportunity to take their theme for ‘Burnt’ and turn it into some Continuous Piano. A tiny new cadence crept into the piece. And that this is on vinyl with 24-bit sound is all the better!”

The ‘Looped EP’ will be released by Erased Tapes on April 18th as a Ltd. Edition 12” – exclusively for Record Store Day 2015

Long-term Erased Tapes graphics collaborator Torsten Posselt at Feld Studios in Berlin created the cover artwork for the Looped EP, connecting it with both the album and the Thrown EP.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:		

Kiasmos is made up of Icelandic BAFTA-winning composer Ólafur Arnalds, known for his unique blend of minimal piano and string compositions with electronic sounds, and Janus Rasmussen from the Faroe Islands, known as the mastermind of the electro-pop outfit Bloodgroup. Based in Reykjavík, Arnalds used to work as a sound engineer, often for Rasmussen's other projects, where the two musicians discovered their common love for minimal, experimental music.
