This two part online series, curated by Camden Art Centre’s Freelands Lomax Ceramics Fellow, Phoebe Collings-James, looks to unravel what it means to facilitate and hold spaces of knowledge sharing. Mudbelly Teaches was conceived by Collings-James as an intersectional Black queer feminist space that seeks an intimate, reciprocal approach to learning. It is home to ceramics courses for Black people in London, taught by Black ceramicists & artists.

In Part 1, Collings-James invites artist, poet and dancer Serafine1369 and poet, artist, and tarot practitioner Daniella Valz Gen to consider how their practices of tarot, divination and performance can embody queer thinking around teaching in spaces outside and on the fridges of institutional structures. Rooted in spirituality, the artists consider how through these shared practices and spaces one can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and find relief from alienation.

The Freelands Lomax Ceramics Fellowship supports emerging artists working with clay. Between 2017-21, the Fellowship offers artists part-time six-month residencies at Camden Art Centre with an exhibition in the following year.

James and Barbara are friends of mine that have taught me how to use a plethora of my instruments over the years. The Psychic Liberation show aims to document and recount information through conversations with artists working within sub, and sometimes countercultural, connective musical or otherwise creative communities. This is a template worth reflection as we enter a further atomizing digital age wherein the role of in person connectivity is actively subverted and co-opted by convenient social interfaces. This program aims to create a model by which inspiration and information can be pulled from and applied to aiding burgeoning communities regardless of form, content, or make-up.

It all began eight years ago with a copy of R. Murray Schafer’s The Tuning of the World found in a box in a cabin, deep within the Pacific coast rain forest. This catalyst provoked Scott Gailey to draw inspiration from the sublime environment that surrounds his home on the West Coast of British Columbia. This exact landscape had a profound effect years earlier on a group of composers centred around Schafer and Simon Fraser University, including Hildegard Westerkamp and Barry Truax, who banded together as the World Soundscape Project (WSP). Where the WSP was primarily interested in field recording as sound ecology - documenting, preserving, and archiving a changing landscape - Gailey explores the musicality of field recordings through various synthetic approaches, a way to access the ambiguous emotional content latent in the natural world. There is a subjectivity to Gailey’s work, and in that sense it has more in common with the sensual musique concrète of Luc Ferrari, or even the Fluxus tape works of Henning Christiansen, than with the WSP. Despite having roots in this well of thought, Polysensuality is undeniably modern, finding kinship with contemporary works by Sugai Ken, Visible Cloaks, and Meitei, while also dipping a toe in the sound pool created by Haruomi Hosono and Hiroshi Yoshimura. Gailey has previously explored this palette in his duo You’re Me with Yu Su, but here there is more space, more silence, greater extremes, and in this way it is more personal, like a soliloquy rather than a conversation.
