East-London's Riva Starr joins Defected's illustrious list of House Masters as he continues to establish himself as one of the world's top DJs and producers. Growing up surrounded by the rich musical culture of Southern Italy, Starr's influences come from all over; the sounds of Africa, Greece, Spain and the Balkans are ever-present within his revered house releases. Genre-wise his approach is similarly expansive, first falling for breakbeat after years of experimentation in Naples, before exploding onto the UK fidget and deep house scene in the noughties. Years later, the Snatch! owner's epic catalogue is brimming with the very best club music this side of the millennium, unrestricted by genre convention and bursting with eclectic samples and unpredictable references. Following the success of the first two Balearic Gabba Edits release, Hell Yeah has commissioned the third EP in the VINYL ONLY series from Enzo Elia. The Italian is a label favourite, with much of his back catalogue coming via Hell Yeah since 2009, and people like Soul Clap, JD Twitch, Red Rack Em and Photonz all confirmed fans of his previous edit work.

The first of this new package is the Mr Marvin – Hammond Groove (Too Many Thomas Edit). It’s a slowly percolating, pad laced Balearic daydream that eventually gets underpinned by a slow and bulbous kick drum as icy neon melodies drift about above. Late on some hi hats add to the rhythm, couching the whole thing in a deep house framework that looks to the stars.

Next, Morenas – Cuando Brilla La Luna (Polyglot Edit) is all watery to start, wooden sounding percussion from xylophones to wind chimes seem to hang in the air above a gentle tumble of tropical bongos. It’s lush and escapist and builds with a restrained minimalism of the sort perfect for opening any set.

On the flip, Sunset Village Inc. – So Real (Ultradubabbestia Edit) is pure warehouse vibes right from the off. Raw as you like hi hats tear apart big thick kicks, grid iron synths straight from a Gerry Read record slam down each bar and a rave making “ooh” vocal insight a full on dancing frenzy that gets all the more intense when a bassline straight from ‘88 billows into the mix.
