"When Waxed Records approached me about possibly doing a release for them I was super excited off the back. It's not every day a label comes to someone whether the label is new or not. After having a chat with Max, head guy over at Waxed, and checking out Waxed's fantastic catalogue of tracks, I knew immediately I wanted Brandon (Mathis) on this project. Him and I have worked together before on some tracks and the workflow has always been nothing but pleasurable for the both of us. Mathis, being the talented musician that he is, will work the instruments, and I'll work production, structuring, and the mixing side of things. We really never even have to say anything when we work together, things just kind of happen and we see what sticks. We have known each other since the high school days but really came together as friends once we connected for musical purposes, which is something we believe music should do anyway... Bring people together.

The way we approached this composition is really how I would any other way.. make the drums, the melody, then the bass. However, Mathis had the great idea of injecting some funky BeBop styled influences in to the track as shown by the "Talkative" almost confused high notes on the piano. We thought it worked great and the rest followed."

About two years ago we started the release series "Yo Bro" together with some of our closest artists. After countless positive feedbacks and requests for participation in this project, we decided a year ago to turn the third "Yo Bro" release into our first Various Artists LP. After a year of planning and work, this centrepiece is finally complete. The compilation features artists from eight different countries and three different continents. It was important for us to create an interesting musical and human balance for this release. The "Yo Bro - LP" stands for the diversity of the dark, deep and rolling side of contemporary Drum & Bass.

Here at Serial Killaz we get excited on another level when a brand new artist to the label turns up at our door with a bag of unreleased tracks, created especially for us. You can imagine how we felt loading up this EP from newcomer Shayper, donning our futuristic space suits and throwing all kinds of mental shapes around the studio. What you’re getting here with the ‘Take a Stand’ EP is 4 tracks made in the future so strap in and embrace the ride.

‘Never Forgotten’ is like a bullet train on acid with its crushing breakbeat slices, pitched up female vocals and a kick drum that wallops so hard it should come with some kind of health warning. Mix that with an instrumental interlude that oozes sonic excellence, providing that essential breathing space before going in all over again.

Talking of which, up next is ‘Breathe’, a certified corner creeper and no doubt one to get lost in. It’s a murky little number that will have your heels sinking into the carpet in true nightmare fashion; easy to get sucked in, hard to get out. Flipping the script a full 360 degrees with ‘Sunsets’ where Shayper demonstrates his softer side, blending 80’s synth pads with soft vocals before adding a touch of spice to the bassline melody. Quirky and outside of the box, just what we like.

Ending on a high with ‘Free’ and it’s glossy piano tinkering, shuffling breaks and devastating highs and lows. A bit like the last 12 months really with it’s many ups and downs, twists and turns. A top quality end to the EP and certainly a track that was put in last place to make you sit up and think...maybe I should take notice of finishing tracks a bit more. Banger.
