Bengyu (𝘣𝘦̀𝘯𝘨-𝘪̄𝘶 / 朋友) is a selector / DJ from Washington, DC now residing in Seattle, WA.

Growing up in a Cantonese household, his exposure to dance music began early on exploring disco and trance compilations in discount bins at Tower Records. Throughout his youth, he played viola in orchestras, and listened mostly to punk, pop and hip-hop CDs. This heavily inspired his curiosity for attending raves and renegades later on, which progressed to learning to mix and beatmatch on software programs.

Bengyu started playing gigs at college in Richmond, VA. Soon after he worked with DC underground and grassroots collectives such as Nu Androids, DMV Deep, and Sous La terre, while playing nights at the fabled U Street Music Hall, Flash, Jimmy V’s, and A.i. His style is an homage to his youth ranging from techno, hard dance, hardgroove, trance, and eurodance, with splashes of breakbeat, electro, and drum & bass.
