Edit [1/8/14]: It seems that I have won the competition. A massive thank you to everyone who voted for me and for anyone who has listened and supported my mixes over the past year or so. I'm absolutely honored to have received a radio show from rohitbangera from whom I got a biweekly spot on Surge Radio, a station that boasts some serious talent. Listen in starting from January 18th, I'll make sure to send some banging mixes your way!



Well 2013 certainly was a memorable year, and what better way to remember it than a mix that takes you through some of its highlights? Before listening to the mix, I want to give you a good idea of what kind of tracks you're going to hear.

This year we saw the uprising of tech & psy influence into higher BPM Trance as well as some great new tracks from upcoming artists such as Ian Standerwick, Adam Ellis and Allen & Envy. 

Aly & Fila once again had a great year, and I could not help but put two songs by them in my Year mix. Their "Quiet Storm" album made quite an impression on me as it was by far my favorite Trance release in a long time.

Then we obviously cannot forget about the great Bryan Kearney who had many great releases this year, who also found Mr. Adam Ellis that produced one of the most iconic 140 tracks of 2013, "Napalm Poet"

My personal favorite set that I saw was Simon Patterson's in the UK while I was there for a Studying Abroad Program. His remix of Neelix's Track "Leave Me Alone" is my first introduction into Psy-Trance, a genre that I have come to explore and love this year.

BT's "Skylarking" was the certainly the most cohesive, well produced track all year without a doubt. And while I would have loved to use the Original Mix, it simply did not fit into my set. Instead I opted for a remix that I could hoof up the BPM in while still keeping it's identity, and combined it with an interesting vocal in Super8 & Tab's "Your Secret's Safe".

Altered Exposure - Sasha and John Digweed's 'Northern Exposure' reimagined

This mix was created for the /r/classicstrance comp, the prompt encouraging one or more rare tracks (hence the 'under the table') pre-2008 trance with no other restrictions. Freedom! I've been itching to make a classics prog set for a while anyway. This set leans in to that classic late 90s prog sound, although it reaches in to the EE era as well. Journey prog was always my favorite and likely always likely will be. Shame the genre is nearly non-existent in 2023. I wanted this mix to be dreamy and a bit more emotive than some of the mixes I've made lately. This mix really takes its time as well, so sit back for the ride. There are some footnotes to explain the rarity or composition path for some of the tracks below. 128-137bpm. Enjoy.

I would not usually dissect such pristine tracks, but I noticed a few years ago that Lost Tribe's 'Under the Red Sea' and Darey's infamous 'Wizards of the Sonic' Remix were made from the same ingredients. Had to cook up a new recipe with them. This is a longer version with a remaster.
***** 2023 update to an outro remix. This update has more elements of the red sea and extended.
****** I thought I could use the Solarstone Pure Intro as it is 2011 remix of a 1999 track, but alas, I missed a rules clarification for modern booties only. This hybrid was made to get around the rules.

The weirdo underground live-house duo that is SHOUSE often invite local singers and musicians to collaborate when bunkered down in their Collingwood studio. New release “Love Tonight” is an amalgamation of this working environment, whilst being a cheeky parody and adorable homage to the classic ’80’s celebrity extravaganza that was Bandaid “We Are The World”. Assembling a choir of all the people that they have loved and admired in their local scene (Oscar Key Sung, Monte Morgan (Client Liaison), Bec from The Harpoons, HABITS, Pillow Pro and so many more!), Ed and Jack have delivered the type of number that champions unity and a shared sense of eternal wonder for the future! 

For remixes we have Mike Simonetti (Horse Meat Disco) delivering a dark acid heavy late night techno jam, DJ Seinfeld who eschews the hook altogether for a fun lo-fi belter, and Australian newcomers The Nights with a lusciously pulsating melodic mover. Theres also an exceptional Acapella mix with plenty of dance saxophone!

My contribution to the Reddit r/electronicmusic Yearmix 2018.

The Reddit yearmix is a project where 48 DJs combine their respective 30 minute mixes into one continuous 24 hr DJ set. This year the mix has increased to 100 DJs and 48 hrs, but spread over 4 separate "stages" of about 12 hrs each. This mix is from the Rave Stage, and features 7 legendary trance classics in updated and uplifting remixes at 140 bpm.

So finally after 4 years I bring to you A Golden Era of Breakbeat Volume 2.
After the overwhelming response to Volume 1 I knew that making Volume 2 was a tough challenge,  so it took a while  to make sure this mix lived up to the success of the first one. Some of the finest moments of my career have been playing Breakbeat. I feel that’s what makes this genre of music so special. I have met some of the most amazing people and experienced incredible highlights in my career. 1999-2001 was when trance really made an impact for me, so making a 1999 mix was deffo on my list! This era of trance had such a wide spectrum of music, few rules... few who cared about genre... just bangin' sets and bangin' people. You never really knew what to expect from some DJ's who would spin up quite the variety of trance, house, and whatever felt right for the night. 

And that's how I approached this mix. A bit funky, a bit weird, and ever so 1999. Except for the intro, which is not 1999, and I am sorry about that but it had to be done.

And that leads to my mix, which is called The Inside Joke. There's a backstory to the beginning of this mix and maybe, just maybe, one of you will get it. Enjoy, was a lot of fun making it.
