Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast, and back to this Series. 

In this series, we’re taking a look at some of the most iconic locations in Ireland, and the stories and myths attached to them. 

This episode we are talking about the Cailleach again. The Cailleach Beara offered her love, and her longing to the youthful CuChulainn. If you go to the lighthouse at Loop Head in County Clare, you will see a stone stack off to the side of the cliff. It’s known to be the location where the Cailleach leapt after Cuchulainn, who was running away from her and fell to her death.

The Story might hold more significance than you might first perceive. The King Nial of the Nine Hostages lay down with the Cailleach. The King had no problem being mature enough to see past her features and see her inner beauty. Could this mean more for the young boy warrior? The Greatest warrior of all time, Cuchulainn… was also a boy that never matured. And he certainly never slept with the Ceailleach.

In this series, we’re taking a look at some of the Classics of Irish mythology, those stories that most people know, or at least know a version of. 

In this episode, Aron tells of beautiful Deirdre and her doomed love story. Called one of the “three sorrows of storytelling” this is one that will tug at the heart. It is also known as one of the set-up stories, or the priomhscealta, to the epic of the Táin. 

To do this one justice, Aron decided to put in all the details! And as a result, we decided to make it a two-parter. This is the second of two.

This is the conclusion of a brand new series. In this series, we are looking back at an old story, or set of stories and telling it in a new way, from a lot of different perspectives. We are calling this the Táin Mosaic, as the shattered fragments of this story can be put back together in a multiplicity of ways, and we decided to shine a light on some of the lesser known characters within the story.

Fintan Mac Bochra, the first man to set foot on Ireland, following his wife, Cesaire, lived a long life; over five thousand years. He changed into all the different animals of Ireland, and witnessed all the changes, all the new peoples who came to Ireland down through the centuries. He saw the defeat of the magical Tuatha de Dannan at the hands of the Sons of Mil, and witnessed the great deeds of the Red Branch and the Fianna.

Episode 12 - The Sons Of Tuireann

It was said in tradition that 'there isn't an ailment or infirmity the cure of which doesn't grow in the fields or along the hedges', and indeed, our forebears employed a wide range of historical practices to drive out infirmity and illness.  While a great deal of folk cures were entirely practical in their application, many others turned to the use of magic, sacrifice and the use of charms, rituals or prayer – modes of thought quite at odds with altogether more modern, secular perspectives.

Far from being casually forged in the half-light of ignorance, our folk cures reveal those measures which, being deeply concerned with human life and welfare, were called on in times of crisis, in order to provide reassurance and comfort in the face of insecurity, illness and anxiety.

For this episode of Blúiríní, Jonny examines definitions of folk medicine before taking a look at the healing deities of Classical European Paganism, and Irish mythology alike. Our explorations will then turn to consider the host of plagues, pestilences and infirmities outlined in our medieval chronicles, before we take a look at folk cures recorded in the archives of the National Folklore Collection University College Dublin. 

As we presently accustom ourselves to life in varying degrees of 'lockdown', it is worth turning to the past, in order to draw on the endurance, strength and patience with which our forebears held themselves through hardship. As the saying goes, 'Ní neart go chur le chéile!' ('There is no strength without unity!')

This month we are celebrating the Goddess Brigid and her feast day of Imbolc by releasing a month filled with Goddess stories.

Aron told the story of Fionn meeting Sadhbh way back in episode 14 but, this time Sorcha tells a reimagining of the story from Sadhbh’s perspective.

In the Fianna Fionn Mac Coole was the great leader, but there is an old Irish proverb that says “a man is a man when his woman is a woman”. And though we usually know the story of Sadhbh from Fionn’s perspective, this cuts out an entire chunk of the action. 

Sorcha delves deeper into the mind of a woman tormented by an evil druid, unable to take no for an answer. Cruelly cursed, her only reprieve is the short lived love she finds with Fionn, which leaves her pregnant. But all too soon she is whisked away to the other world, and her torment resumes.

She gave birth to Oísin - but that is all we know of her. Is she still in the otherworld? Did she ever get away from her tormentor? How can someone sustain themselves living like that?

Episode 91 - Sadhbh's Story

We are a group of storytellers, performers, and musicians. We tell Irish myths to a live audience with live music.
Candlelit Tales was founded by brother-sister storytelling duo Aron and Sorcha Hegarty. Driven by a passion for Irish mythology, we started retelling the stories to a near-empty room upstairs in a Dublin pub one rainy evening in November. The next week, the room was a lot less empty, and we were joined by musician Ru O’Sé. By the fourth week, the room was full, and so was the hall outside. We realised that when we share our passion, it becomes contagious. And we’ve been telling stories and playing music from that day to this. 

Since then, over the past five years of telling stories in the capital of this nation of storytellers, we have developed and refined our uniquely expressive, naturalistic and modern style. Live music is the heartbeat of all our performances, and a live original music score composed by a team of talented musicians drives the rhythm of the stories
