Latest contribution to the serie comes from one of the most discreet member of the Exocet family.  @sixtyfortyy develops a strong attraction towards UK rhythms as for deeper and trippy atmopsheres. Originated from the Ardeche moutains and based on the mediteranean coast, Paul sources his energy in the natural landscapes around him and drawn his inspirations from them to inspire his listening and djing sessions. 

In this 31st episode he delivered a musical interpretation of the red mud phenomenon.

≋ Why did you choose this theme ?

S-F : The red mud caused a major ecocide just a few kilometres from Marseille, where I am living. For more than fifty years an alumina factory has been allowed to pour out a highly alkaline waste in the mediteranean sea. Between twenty and thirty tones of those toxic waste – called the red mud – has been rejected in the highly rich Calanques ecosystem. The law of proximity and my love for this place played a role in my choice I guess. Those highly polluted rejections has been legally forbidden since last year in the area but it is not the case everywhere unfortunately: the artwork comes from some russian rivers aslo full of dark muds.


≋ What pictures were brought to your imagination when preparing this episode ? 

S-F : Scientific knowledges are too weak to determine the effects of the naturally high radioactivity of the red muds particules on the marine habitats and I took inspiration from this « unknown threat ». I tried to set an industrial and gloomy atmosphere to tend toward a vibe where I pictured the ecosystem morphing in a chemical yet colourful way.

Red mud is an industrial waste discharged in the alumina production process. Due to the high level of production and the material's high alkalinity it can pose a significant environmental hazards if it is not stored properly. Water and air pollution, land and farmland occupation, building and soil affectations are standing as the main hazards. For every tonne of alumina produced, approximately 1 to 1.5 tonnes of red mud are also produced. Annual production of alumina in 2020 was over 133 million tonnes resulting in the generation of over 175 million tonnes of red mud. Because of its large amount of discharge and high alkalinity, it is mostly stored in dams, occupying a large number of land resources and posing a great safety hazard to the ecological environment. The large-scale consumption of red mud is a global technical problem. Different alumina production processes will produce different types of red mud, mainly Bayer process red mud. In addition to its overall utilization in the field of building materials, agriculture, the environment, and the chemical industry, red mud also contains valuable metal elements, such as titanium, iron, scandium, and aluminum, and is an important secondary mineral resource.
