ABOUT Cigarra:

Ágatha Barbosa (Cigarra) is a DJ, VJ, performer and producer from São Paulo and currently living in Lisbon, Portugal. She is a member of Tropical Twista Records and the VOODOOHOP collective. She also leads 2 parallel projects: Jardim Eléctrico that focuses on audiovisuals and Jardim das Descoisas that focuses on kinderculture.

In her sets, Brazilian rhythms and exotic, world sounds combine with contagious low frequencies and hypnotic, seductive cuts. Playing sets for 10 of her 30 years, Cigarra released her first EP “Límbica” with tracks that have been part of the most recent history of her collage work. Her research for this EP is based on cultures that are ancestral and organic, urban and synthetic, and includes ghetto-electronics and psychedelic rock. The EP has 6 tracks based on sampling. Each one resembles a hurricane in a woman’s voice and is powerful.

As a young teenager, Matossian commenced over a decade of training in classical voice. After graduating from the University of British Columbia in 1995, she spent seven years as a high school instructor of English Literature and Language Arts, in addition to time as a counsellor.

In 1998 she became the first family member to travel to Armenia since her grandmother, a survivor of the Armenian Genocide, had been deported c. 1915. While there, volunteering for an English-language newspaper, Matossian became informed of the overwhelming plight of Armenian street children. Her involvement with these children culminated in a 2002 leave of absence from her teaching career to work for three months with themMatossian’s return from Armenia marked the beginning of her professional career as a musician. 2004 saw Matossian awarded with a Music/Career Development grant from the Canada Council for the Arts[citation needed], providing her the means to release her debut recording, Far from Home, early the same year.[1] Far from Home has enjoyed airplay across Canada, in the United States and Europe, and was selected in 2005 as one of John Diliberto’s 25 Essential Albums for Echoes radio program on NPR.

Matossian’s concerts have been recorded by the CBC and broadcast nationally across Canada.[2] She has performed with the renowned oud master (Udi), John Berberian. Other acclaimed Canadian musicians such as Jesse Zubot, Ernie Tollar, Francois Houle, Elliot Polsky, and Catherine Potter rank among those with whom she has shared a stage.

In 2008 Matossian joined forces with the instrumental world fusion group Free Planet Radio,[3] which includes River Guerguerian (percussion), Chris Rosser (cumbus, oud), and Grammy award winner, Eliot Wadiopian (acoustic bass). The group performs together to sold out crowds in southeast USA. Greenville News arts writer Ann Hicks calls Matossian “a rare, compelling artist who can spellbind any audience.”[4]

Here's the recording for my DJ set from July 2nd, 2017 at the Katerblau Kiosk, hands down my favorite place to play music in Berlin.  The whole venue is a wonderland of discovery, the staff is extremely kind and hospitable, and I don't think I've played for a more open minded crowd in all of Europe. Longer sets allows you to take your time and be patient with the music, and the mixing.  The slow building journey I had imagined in my mind, was possible to make a reality, and extra time allowed me to experiment as well. This was probably my favorite gig of my entire 2 month Summer Sol Europe Tour. I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I had creating it in the Kiosk.  Thanks to Mira, Britta, Martin, Claudia, Joyce, David, Brett, Toto, Sylvie, Dorin, any other friends I may have forgotten who were there, and especially to all you lovely dancers who joined me on this ride. »The inspiration behind my Seaside Trip journey is this amazing poem by the beloved Pablo Neruda, called The Sea. To me, what Pablo seems to be telling us is that the sea is a living, breathing organism, whose essence is an ongoing, caressing movement. It was already a while ago when we came across Thomas’ music, due to his unique remix of “Civilian”, released by Jamie Antonelli. And we loved what followed after this so it was obvious to have him on board one time. His latest releases have been brought out by the likes of underyourskin records, Audiolith or Molt.

When they invited me to play at Sisyphos, I was told I can do what ever I want as I opened the Stage..

Für unsere Nr. 125 haben wir einen geheimnisvollen musikalischen Tiefseetaucher an Land gezogen, der uns mit seinen zart-bitteren, winterlichen Klängen verzaubert. Wir dürfen euch vorstellen: Loki Styx aka "Really bad guy from deep Space. Unholy Lord of the mighty FancyDancers. Rogue & Bouncebringer at Night." Har, har.

Informationen gibt es so gut wie keine über ihn. Aber ehrlich gesagt, wer braucht schon einen gängigen lyrischen Lobgesang zu all den tollen Dingen, die der oder die Künstler eben tut/tun? Schließlich handelt es sich schlussendlich doch um einen musikalischen Podcast. Ganz genau, Musik. Und hierfür liefert Loki ein gewaltiges Statement ab, das seinesgleichen sucht. 

Zurückhaltend, gedämpft und mit viel Liebe zum Detail schippert er durch die weiten Welten verschickter, langsamer, elektronischer Musik. Ohne zu Untertreiben, aber von Anfang bis zum Ende lässt einen das Set nicht mehr los. Zu toxisch ist die in sich tragende Stimmung, die die Tracks erst im Zusammenspiel erzeugen. Wer nach dem berühmt berüchtigten roten Faden sucht, ist hier absolut an der richtigen Stelle. In seinem Set geht es auch ebenso wenig darum, tolle aktuelle Tracks zu spielen, sondern eine individuelle Note zu transportieren, die sich keineswegs auf ein Genre reduzieren lässt. Dafür aber umso mehr auf ein Gefühl. Und das heißt hier: 'Entspanntes Treiben lassen'. Chapeau Loki Styx.

There is a unique presence in the work of Toronto based Duo, Nature of Music. The duo fuses rhythm, melody, and harmony into musical works that combine both live performance and DJing into sophisticated blends. Drum machine rhythm pieces, mesmerizing palettes of melody sprinkled with hints of spoken word and acapella, and rich atmospheric pads and string ensembles create deep harmonies that all play equal rolls in the duo’s theater of sound.
Nature of Music formed in 2009 and has since worked with some of the industry’s most innovative tastemakers. They have been praised by industry heavyweight, Hernan Cattaneo as a “Top production duo to look out for.” This is reflected with their releases for Cattaneo’s influential Sudbeat label. Their talent has brought them to international territories across oceans for both intimate affairs and crowd jamming festivals. Having been invited to play at Robert Miles’ OpenLab nights in Ibiza, they’ve gotten the attention of some of the true pioneers of modern dance music. Nature of Music stylistically are unlike any other and after a few plays become instantly recognizable. Their work is aimed to make people move a way that keeps them lost in the present moment.
