The original version of the track was recorded in Marfa, TX, before the band commenced official tracking for 'Shields' in Cape Cod and New York, and was released earlier this month on 'Shields Expanded' and 'Shields B-Sides.' The collections build on their acclaimed 2012 iTunes Album of the Year with exclusive b-sides, demos, and remixes.

'Shields' was released to some of 2012's best reviews, with Pitchfork calling it "magnificently epic" and the NY Times hailing it as "enthralling." The band performed tracks from the album on Colbert, Fallon, Letterman, Leno, Austin City Limits, and Ellen, and played their biggest headlining and international festival shows to date.

London-based singer-songwriter Douglas Dare releases new EP, following on from his debut album Whelm. Named after album track Caroline and new track If I Knew I Were Alive, it also features remixes by fellow label mate Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles and Houndstooth’s own electronic producer Ross Tones aka Throwing Snow.
Caroline has always been a precious track for Douglas, one of the first tracks he recorded and a story in which he imagines his grandfather is writing to a loved one during the war. As the only song on his debut album that is stripped down to just his voice and piano playing, and it being a favourite amongst fans at his concerts, it was a natural choice as a first single.

Between takes whilst recording the EP Desert Songs, the two songwriters Dawn Landes and Piers Faccini found inspiration for the songs they were writing together by walking in the stark and beautiful mountain scenery around Piers’s studio in the Cevennes region of the south of France. Chatting as they walked, they swopped tales of desert mystics and seekers that would inspire them to write the songs for their collaborative EP. Dawn and Piers wove the arrangements together using the rich collection of instruments in Piers’s studio, a Malian Kora, a 1930’s National resonator guitar, West African percussion and an Indian dulcimer and tampura.
