Fit Roadster

Back in the mists of time (probably about 1976) John Peel and John Walters would do a little three or four minute sketch on Alan Freeman's Saturday morning show advertising the Peel show. Walters always played the non-speaking role with grunts and exclamations whilst Peel did the talking. I loved them as a kid and have tapes of four or five. It's taken until now to get them off third rate tape (a Dindy C90!) onto the computer. Enjoy!

"Ekho:: Women in Sonic Art" on Wordpress put a link to Caterina Barbieri recently and I was kind of hooked. This is my much less considered and thoughtful take on her Undular. It's a very different piece - probably far too full and not at all deep and meaningful but I enjoy the richness of the sounds. There's something of an over-the-top chocolate brownie about it - just more of everything! It is a bit "full" so will sound like shit on a laptop/ipad speaker. Go on; slap it on the hi-fi or dig out those headphones :-)
Incidentally it's all done on homemade MFOS kit - three VCOs, a VCA, couple of LFOs and a low pass filter recorded in three passes on Ableton. Three tracks of three VCOs does kind of explain why it gets a little dense in there!

Jump - a radio Drama by Ken Whitmore recorded from the radio in the late 70s. Apologies for the bit of silence near the start - the teenage me must have pressed the wrong button for a few seconds. Digitised and uploaded for my sister who reminded me of Jump a few months ago. Miraculously it appeared on an old tape recently so here it is!

Jump

A self playing patch which doesn' repeat largely because the two out of phase LFOs rarely have the same combined effect and even when they do the wogglebug controlling the filter is very random. Also the sporadic bell sound is using random pitch and random gate so is very irregular all round. A patch I can listen to for hours as it goes from sweet and almost melodic to raucous and growly. I'm going to find it hard to take this one apart :-)

Warbling Modulated Synch and Ring Mod Sounds

A dozen or so MFOS modules making an unholy racket which I rather like. Grainy noise from a Cornucopia is feeding a Sample and Hold. One CV out is controlling a VCO, the other is controlling a VCA with a white noise input to create the spitty steamy sounds with an LFO controlling the cut off frequency of a low pass filter for variety.
There's a 10 step sequencer being triggered by the square wave of another LFO set fairly slow. The random gate on the cornucopia is triggering an AR envelope generator which is controlling the filtering of some low noise and another VCO.

Monday morning mindscape

Something of a Krell experiment with Rene setting pitches in groups of four and the turing pulses 1247 output randomly advancing to the next group of four. Stages is creating an envelope and clock. The Turing machine and volts is controlling the rise and fall length of the envelope, a divider dividing the clock by 3 and going in to the Marbles which is sending triggers to filtered white noise using a Rampage envelope and to Rings which is being controlled largely by the ocht which is also controlling the rise and fall of the white noise envelope. The main tone is a Befaco even vco with just a little bit of FM which is in turn being affected by an LFO or two. It's not exactly tuneful but then that's not what I was looking for. I was after more of a post apocalyptic mysterious mayhem sort of sound.

Nasty Krell Sounds

One from the end of January when I'd been laid up with the flu for five weeks. I guess that explains the relatively quiet mood. I'm sure the Rene was involved - I guess it was feeding Rings and another oscillator and then cross fading between the two sounds somehow - I've no idea how though, it was too long ago!

Fairly Restful Tuneful Bongs

I sporadically make synthesizer modules, largely using MFOS printed circuit boards, and then mess about in a very un-directed way making a variety of noises with my growing modular synth. I have a number of modules waiting to be completed but so far I'm using three VCOs, three LFOs, a couple of filters, a dual AREG, an ADSR, a dual VCA, an MFOS 10 step sequencer, a noise cornucopia, sample and hold, ring mod, phase shifter, MFOS mini synth and wogglebug. The MFOS Sound Art page ( http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/index.php?MAINTAB=ELECTRONART&VPW=1024&VPH=526 ) has spurred me on to record some of my noises and I'm learning to use Garage Band to broaden the range of strange noises which I can produce. I'm also trying to get to grips with making sounds on the iPad, particularly with the Korg iMS20, Rebirth and Animoog. Recently I've been sucked in to buying and assembling kits from Thonk which is a pleasure, and buying a few rather splendid modules from Make Noise and Mutable Instruments. I enjoy not taking any of my noise making too seriously :-)
