Blood Sister is back with their heady brand of blown-out rippers. Ezana Edwards, formerly of Brooklyn act Night Manager, relocated to San Francisco after the band parted ways and initially started jamming with members of Bay Area mainstays such as Ganglians, The Mallard, and Warm Soda for early Blood Sister shows.

Edwards, who handles guitar/vocals, enlisted Vanessa Robinson on bass, Syam Zapalowski on guitar/synthesizer, and K. Dylan Edrich (ex-The Mallard) on drums to complete Blood Sister’s current live band. On his new self-titled EP for Bloodmoss Records, Edwards wrote and recorded all of the songs himself using a variety of studios and techniques that were vital for its completion.

Blood Sister has and will always be as loud as possible, and the dynamic song structures, screeching guitars, and surging blasts this time around don’t just make up songs, they make up a machine. And it’s a vicious one.

AUSMUTEANTS started life in late 2011 in Geelong by Jake Robertson and Billy Gardner. Both had been playing since teenagers in trad garage bands The Frowning Clouds (Jake) and The Living Eyes (Billy). Being good looking rebels who play by their own rules, they cracked the shits, broke loose with just a synth and drums and in early 2012, knocked out the 'Split Personalities' tape. By the time that was out they'd added Melbourne loose-unit Marc Dean on bass, and soon after, ex-Canberran hardcore non-guitarist Shaun Connor on guitar.

Their second album 'Amusements' (note: not self-titled) came from this fledgling time as a full band, with a heavy dose of the duo’s songs. Since the runaway international success of that record and playing every second weekend in Melbourne, they’re rocked-out full-tilt with all four members writing and singing new songs. 23 of these were recorded live with vocal overdubs in the basement of an old Geelong ice cream factory by Mikey Young, then mixed and mastered in his idyllic coastal abode. Again the band and their Australian label Aarght Records strained the friendship with song picks, agreeing on 13 to make up 'Order of Operation'.

This record is better than Amusements any way you cut it: songs, lyrics, delivery and sound. The album opens up with Shaun’s forehead- and thigh-slapping musical and lyrical debut, "Freedom of Information". His girlfriend is suffering the indignity with panache. From there, songs range from balls-to-the-wall punkers ("Felix Tried to Kill Himself"; "Boiling Point"), well-considered workouts ("Family Time"; "Tunnel Vision") and unguarded tenderness ("Wrong"; "Looney Bin").

It's not just the band and label singing the album’s praises; it's the people who couldn't stand their juvenile bullshit before. They’ve ditched the toilet humour, got nasty and written songs about other people’s problems, terrible bands, fighting crime and trading sex for porn. Mikey after a vocal take: “You deserve to be bashed for that” (the song’s on the record; you guess which one).

'Order of Operation' is now their defining moment. If you don't like this record, you pretty much won't ever like Ausmuteants.

Following 2012's wonderful "Bleached Highlights," an album that generated many rave reviews, Joe McAlinden is back with "Rest And Be Thankful," another elegantly soulful and emotional record. Having travelled to West Heath Yard in 2012 to work with Edwyn Collins and Sebastian Lewsley on "Bleached Highlights," Joe decided this time he needed a rural approach and it quickly became apparent that it would be easier to make a new record at home in Argyll with the Linden live band; Stuart Kidd, Eric Lindsay and Marco Rea. Joe built a makeshift studio in an old fisherman's croft on the shores of Loch Fyne, threw some logs on the fire and set about recording Rest and be Thankful which he then sent to Edwyn and Seb via courier pigeon to mix at WHY in London. The boys reckon you can hear Argyll in the music, you can feel where Joe lives... a sonic snapshot of rural life!

"Rest And Be Thankful" simply thrums with love and loss, whether it's the starkly pretty I See, which talks of someone who "leaves a shadow on the ground, even though you're not around," or the gently euphoric Broken Glass, with its Memphis Horns-esque bursts of brass. "Rest And Be Thankful" is a simply glorious album.

But let Joe talk you through it...
"The album was recorded on the west coast of Scotland and apparently you can hear this in the songs - the songs certainly sound as though they were recorded there. They feel pretty authentic to me."

"As for the album's theme, there are no common themes really. I've always written about how I feel. It's all I know. Although I do like to mask the weirdness of my fucked-up head with simple lyrics. Not every song can be a dirge!"

"I really don't listen to music when I'm working on music. I find it very distracting! Otherwise, I've been listening to all the usual suspects - Love, 'Nuggets' comps, Gene Clark, Dean Blunt, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and I'm very big on listening to current stuff too. Not stuck in the past, me!"

"Making another record with Edwyn Collins was such a thrill. Throughout my career, I've only wanted to make albums that sound like real records - sounds dumb right? But I've always wanted to listen to me the way I listen to the rest of my record collection. I don't want my albums to sound like me, I want them to sound classic. I think with these last two records I've finally managed to achieve this. I can finally listen to something I've done and feel like I'm listening to just another record!"

"Should I explain the inspiration behind the album title? Yeah, I think so. It was inspired by a mountain pass I drive over every time I travel to and from civilisation. REST & BE THANKFUL are the words inscribed on a stone near the junction of the A83 and the B828, placed there by soldiers who built the original military road in 1753. The original stone fell into ruin and was replaced by a commemorative stone at the same site. The section is so named as the climb out of Glen Croe is so long and steep at the end that it was traditional for travellers to rest at the top, and be thankful for having reached the highest point. I know how they feel."

O-FACE began on Whidbey Island, a vacation getaway located in Washington state’s Puget Sound. Originally a bedroom-pop duo featuring vocalist/guitarists Seth Sobottka and Preston Ossman, the duo grew into a quintet during Sobottka and Ossman's freshman year at Bard College in New York's Hudson Valley. Joined by Atticus Pomerantz on bass, Dash Flach on synth, and Clay Kaledin on drums, the group spent a over a year recording and producing their debut LP 'Taste'--a process which helped them realize that brevity has its benefits.

Set for release as O-FACE graduates from Bard and bids farewell to the musical community they've called home for the past three years, Mint touches frequently on memory--memories of beat-up station wagons, Star Trek reruns, and the perils of combining record collections. Named in honor of their seafoam green band house/rehearsal space 'The Mint Mansion', the EP touches on the minute experiences and encounters that over time become so important to how we remember our homes and friends.

Mint embraces O-FACE's live sound--complete with three-part vocal melodies and interlocking guitarmonies--while exploring pop tradition and developing a style of its own, dubbed G-Folk.

Mint was recorded and mixed by engineer/producer/guitar hero Joe Reinhart (Algernon Cadwallader, Hop Along) over the course of a week at Headroom Philadelphia Studios. The EP was mastered by Ryan Schwabe at Maniac Mansion in Philly.

Pega Monstro are sisters Júlia Reis (drums) and Maria Reis (guitar, keyboard), both sing! The duo’s name translates as ‘catch the monster’, perfectly countering the band’s striving dream-punk sound. The name ‘Pega Monstro’ also references a novelty toy in the shape of a jelly hand on a string, which children have been throwing at each other in delight for many generations in their native country. Born and raised in Lisbon, Portugal, Maria and Júlia have been playing music together since they were 15 and 17 respectively, in other groups first before resolving on becoming a duo. Back in 2010, both sisters started a record label, along with some of their musician friends, called Cafetra Records to document Portugal’s garage punk scene. Cafetra represents a community of like-minded musicians who all help each other, making music that they’d want to hear, powered by enthusiasm. Pega Monstro were among the first bands on the label, releasing their ‘O Juno-60 Nunca Teve Fita’ EP the same year to a burgeoning audience of devotees, who’d turn up in growing numbers to each show and sing back the lyrics. Maria puts the band’s instant attention down to being different, “we were girls, we were young and we could rock, people weren’t used to that at all”. 2012 saw Pega Monstro release their self-titled debut album, which was produced by B Fachada, an extremely well known Portuguese singer songwriter. The band and producer hit it off like wildfire and recorded an impressive, raucous debut record that met with critical national acclaim.

Now Pega Monstro have a new album ready for Upset The Rhythm, whom they hope will bring their music to audiences outside of their homeland too. ‘Alfarroba’ is the name of this second album, it’s title meaning ‘carob’, after the sweet tasting bean that grows in the wild trees that spontaneously spring up along the Mediterranean coast. Maria explains further, “In Portugal there are a lot of carob trees in the Algarve and our mother's side of the family is from there, we spent every summer there as children. The scent is unlike any other. So apart from the phonetic appeal of the word, ‘Alfarroba’ is also a homage to that heritage”. The songs on ‘Alfarroba’ deal with many themes, some universal topics like love and growing up, others focusing on the nature of writing songs themselves, whilst some try to make sense of the world from a female perspective.
