Industrial music is becoming more fashionable again, apparently. That's a relief because JASSS opens this week's list. It's followed by quirky Rome duo Malihini, which starts an electronic theme taking in the excellent Jane Weaver, adding a rockier edge with KOYO (which starts a bit like Traffic's "Paper Sun"!), and then blending with jazz in the hands of James Holden & The Animal Spirits. The Expanders provide a reggae bridge to a much more indie/garage/(post-)punk ending courtesy of Neaux, Sweet Nobody, Dream Wife and finally Ex-Versions (shades of Franz Ferdinand?). I like the JASSS track a lot, and Jane Weaver is already a favourite in our house, so this week's pick is Malihini's "Drums Rock and Roll" which is different, and different is good, right?

Just a year since the release of their debut LP, Neaux return with their sophomore album, ‘Chain Up the Sun’.

Featuring Sierra Kay (Versa Emerge), and Nick Fit (formerly of Trash Talk), Neaux exist at the intersection of shoegaze and grunge. While atmospheric and dreamy at times, with subtle nods to Slowdive and the Swirlies, the harsher elements of 'Chain Up the Sun' are much clearer. Influenced by the likes of Sebadoh, Mudhoney, and Sonic Youth, Nick's noisy guitars, paired with Sierra's powerful vocals coalesce for an raw and aggressively vulnerable whirlwind of a record.

Clocking in at just under 30 minutes, 'Chain Up the Sun' is Neaux coming into their own, not just as writing partners, but as an ever-evolving band whose found their space in music. ‘Chain Up the Sun’ will be released on October 13th digitally, and on limited edition vinyl variants.

‘With one eye on the dancefloor and another on those sprawling existential questions’ (The Quietus), ‘The Architect’ sees Jane Weaver evolving with an aero-lite melodicism, the drum heavy vivacious pop song evokes vivid images of early Modernist art, Archigram blue-prints with a rigid back-bone of Eames worthy construction.

Directly inspired by Hilma af Klint’s séances, spiritualism and the science of anthroposophy that formed the artist’s abstract paintings, Weaver finds herself in a transformative state channeling her inner spirituality, it’s place within her music and the cosmos. Shifting perspectives with her meditative vocal explorations and oneiric flow on ‘Code’. Eight-minute psych-pop opus ‘Element’ is richly melodic replete with pulsating analogue synths, unrelenting motorik rhythms and incessant beats. 

The perfect antidote to those longing for more music since the release of the critically acclaimed ‘Modern Kosmology’, the release features title track alongside unreleased new tracks and a special remix by Finders Keepers’ Andy Votel.

Jane Weaver and her band will be on extensive UK and Ireland tour from October with a number of special one-off live dates in Europe and festival appearances at this year’s Reeperbahn and Le Guess Who?.

Picking up from where she left off with last years successful Tools of My Purpose, E-Saggila has returned to BANK employing a more sublime and immersive electronic document. Previously leaning toward noisier and distorted rhythms, she has incorporated more sophisticated elements into writing and production. Dedicated to Sublimity is a product of growth and progression but still reflects the raw elements we’ve heard in her early recordings. Lush and atmospheric elements coincide with the brutality of her live sets and play off one another as a cohesive representation of the E-Saggila project.
