For the first show of 2023, Carhartt WIP Radio is welcoming DJ, producer, label founder, and NTS resident @elenacolombi. Colombi’s foray into DJing began over a decade ago, when she moved to London from Italy, and set up a series of successful parties in the city. Her sets became known for their expansive influences and genre-bending rhythms. In 2019, Colombi crystallized her reputation as an eclectic selector by launching her label @osare-editions.
 
Originally founded as a way of reissuing music by Greek artist Thanasis Zlatanos, the label evolved into a platform for daring, experimental, and future-facing releases, rolled out in genres like acid, ambient, coldwave, synth pop, or techno. Osàre! Editions acts include Inkasso and Novo Line from Berlin, Suemori from Tokyo, and L/F/D/M from London.
 
For this Carhartt WIP Radio installment, Colombi created a mix that leans towards the softer and more meditative zones of Osàre! Editions, featuring music of artists like Cucina Povera, Ben Bertrand, or Laurel Halo. As ever, the show is accompanied by an interview with Colombi, who discusses everything from how a stolen cassette tape sparked her curiosity in different sounds to what her favorite tracks are for closing out a party. www.carhartt-wip.com/journal/music

Carhartt WIP Radio January 2023: Elena Colombi Osàre! Editions

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show places a spotlight on Rotterdam and the influential record label, store and distributor @clone-nl.

Founded by @sergeclone, Clone launched in 1992 with the EP “Coördinated Sounds & Sequences," under Serge’s moniker Orx. 

What began as a platform for Serge’s own music and his friends’ has grown into a worldwide operation, with Clone’s current roster of artists including Finland’s Aleksi Perälä, Germany’s Roman Flügel, and Legowelt from The Netherlands, as well as Detroit’s Drexciya, The Other People Place, and Der Zyklus. Under Clone Records are also several sub labels including  Basement Series, Royal Oak, and Clone Jack for Daze.

In 1995, Serge launched Clone the record store, as well as its distribution arm, which specializes in electronic music, original soundtracks, jazz, funk, and Italo disco from a variety of international labels. 

For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, Serge offers an insight into Clone with a mix featuring tracks from its most recent catalog, while paying tribute to the birthplace of techno – Detroit.

"When Torbjörn Brange aka Rhythm In Progress released his first EP in 1996 he called it "Dangerous Vol. 2" for fun and confusion. 23 years later the follow-up record "Dangerous Vol. 1" comes up with four original tracks produced around 1995 – 1997 and rescued from dusty DATs straight out of Torbjörn's basement in Malmö. The tracks have the same Rhythm In Progress trademark sound that made his first release pretty sought after amongst record diggers: Fat drums, sharp hihats combined with a relaxed and refreshing approach to his very own vision of NY & NJ House!"

The tracks testify to a maturity and creativity that one would hardly expect from an 18 year old at the time. "Producer duo Greg Wheeler and Dean Slydell spent a lot of time on the A3 road back in the nineties, which runs from London to Portsmouth. The trax for Molar's third strike date from the same period. House gourmets know their sought after releases from the mid-nineties on UK’s Ferox Records. Molar is very happy to present four diverse tracks that were produced between 1995 and 1998 that have now been carefully remastered for the „A3 EP“. From the rather cheerful house groover „Changing Places (Edit)" and the deep head nodder "Telling Lies" on the A-side to the technoid, slightly reminiscent of Italian Onirico "First Contact" and the freshening breaky "OpenGL" on the B-side - there is something for everyone on MOL03 again!"
