Madlib Medicine Show #10 Black Soul

For the first Carhartt WIP Radio show of 2024, we’re focusing on the Dresden-based independent record label @uncanny-valley-dresden.
 
Launched by four friends as a way of platforming music by close peers and collaborators, the label released its first record in 2010 – a dynamic house-driven compilation featuring Jacob Korn, Cuthead, Thomas Fröhlich, and Break SL. 
 
Almost fifteen years later, Uncanny Valley has grown into an international, multidisciplinary effort, collaborating with artists and musicians alike from Brooklyn, Berlin, and New York City. And with the addition of sub-labels Rat Life and shtum, its sound has remained just as diverse, spanning house, hip-hop, acid, and synth-wave.
 
For this month’s episode, Uncanny Valley created a mix which delves into its eclectic back catalog, highlighting favorite tracks alongside some hidden gems. Expect a journey through jazz-funk, hip hop, ambient, Italo and techno. 

As ever, the mix is accompanied by an interview, where Uncanny Valley’s founders discuss the need for labels in the modern music industry, Dresden’s rich electronic music history, and new projects in the pipeline. Read the interview via via www.carhartt-wip.com/journal/music.

It's already been a decade since J Dilla — the mercurial producer and rapper from Detroit — passed away and his posthumously completed album, The Shining, saw the light of day on BBE Records. 

As they prepare to release the project on 7" for the first time, we're extremely honoured to get our hands on a never-before-heard mixtape by the master himself. Made some time between mid-1999 and early 2000, it's a fly-on-the-wall showing of what Jay Dee had blaring out of his speakers while on the sofa or by the MPC.

He is a DJ, producer, joint founder of the Hi-Hat club, creative brain behind AUDDA records, co-owner of the Groove Attack record store in Cologne, and lover of deep jazz and soul: Twit One is one of the hottest cats in the German beat-smith scene. He calls his own music Cool Bap style - a chilled blend of Boom Bap and soulful cool jazz, that he already presented to the world with several solo albums and EPs on labels like MPM, Entbs or his very own AUDDA imprint. For Carhartt WIP Radio Twit One mixed a show consisting of soon to be released and maybe never released material with involvement from the UK's Henry Wu, Lorenzo Merluzzo, US DJ, producer, singer/songwriter and trumpet player Miles Bonny and the quiet sounds of a grasshoppers swarm. 07 Back in the days

Los Angeles based DJ, multi-instrumentalist, rapper, and music producer Madlib let his mind free wheeling and prepared a Carhartt WIP Radio show that accompanies the Medicine Show Europe Tour 2012 featuring Freddie Gibbs, J Rocc, and himself. His mix features unreleased, unheard, and exclusive Madlib material in combination with some known stuff out of his musical universe. An edgy twisted, 47 minutes long collage that melds hip hop and audio drama into one big psychedelic trip.

Und am Anfang wollte ich es selbst nicht erkenn',
bis ich gemerkt hab', dass meine Beats jazzlastig sind! (Hey!)
Und nicht nur das, Mann, ich hörte mal richtig
auf die Texte und hab' gemerkt: "Oh! Sozialkritisch..."
Was? Ob es überhaupt 'nen Edgar gibt?
Ich verrat's dir nicht, denn du bist nur ein Wack-MC...
Ein Song über die deutsche Integrationspolitik
und ich hab' Fans, die mich loben für "anti-deutsche Musik"
Seid ihr behindert oder versteh' ich den Witz nicht?

scheint es mir als ob meine Hörer geistig behindert sind...
Leute, die über die Nazivergleiche lachen,

Das ist gute, deutsche Aufarbeitung: oberflächlich
Jegliche Absicht und Kontext ignorieren,
doch brav auf die bösen Signalgesten reagieren!
Mann, das ist lächerliche, dumme Scheiße...
Ich hab' eine historisch vorbelastende Hundepfeife!
Und ihr tanzt immer noch danach,
nur der Hundetrainer ist schon tot seit circa 60 Jahren...
