It is not everyday we are sent a 5 hour mix from someone we have asked to join our Phonica mix series; but when Sheffield & Manchester legend Luke Una sends one… you have to jump straight into it! Having become first recognised in the late 80’s and 90’s as one half of production team “The Unabombers” with Justin Crawford, Luke over the years has shown to be a master in all genres be it Balearic, to Brazilian to E soul, House, Disco and Techno, you name it! With his Worldwide FM show over the years gaining a cult following Luke has gained an even more of a broader crowd from his curation of his E Soul Cultura compilation series via the label Mr.Bongo (Both comps topping our EOY lists in 2022 and 2023). This exact vast taste (that is displayed in these compilations) is very much pummelled into this five hour journey of a mix like a piece of clay and sculpted into a fine piece of art. As a producer he makes music that draws on these influences, with a large dose of cheek and good humour.

Raised in South London on a diet of pirate radio and warehouse parties, Charlie Dark has been spinning records and igniting dance floors since the early eighties. If you ever caught his Blacktronica Parties at the legendary Plastic People then you’ll know that 'All forms of music in one room the way it used to be’ has always been his motto and his record crates run deep to live by that mantra.

Black Swan Lane and The Chameleons member MC Kwasi has worked with more artists and DJs than you could imagine. Possibly most famous as Mr Scruff's right wing man, the loveable MC was the host of the seminal Friends & Family events and has been featured on tracks with the likes of Suns Of Arqa, The Messengers, Mark Rae, DJ Vadim and Beatphreak.

>> Vanessa Freeman
Last but not least Singer, songwriter and performer Vanessa Freeman. Vanessa's voice is an experience to behold, immediately distinctive, unadulterated quality and sheer joy. Her live performances are spiritual, recordings timeless and her songs sublime. Vanessa's musical career started early when she joined the local church chorus at the age of twelve and her impact has been felt by many notably for the huge contribution to the acid jazz revival in the nineties.

Together they bring one of our most outstanding collective performances this year. Sit back and relax or get up and dance.

For this month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show we bring you FloFilz, one of Germany’s most in-demand hip hop producers. Since 2013 he has released instrumental records on labels such as Melting Pot Music and Jakarta, with a style that seductively blends soul- and jazz-influenced grooves.

FloFilz’s first two albums as a beatmaker were collaborative works, and in late 2014 he released his first solo LP titled "Metronom". Four instrumental albums have since followed, cementing his reputation as jazz-connoisseur producer, who seeks to open up the genre to a new generation of listeners.

For his Carhartt WIP Radio show, he melds older work with tracks from his upcoming album "Transit". As usual we also sat down to speak to this month’s host, chatting about his upbringing, Bach and J Dilla, and his thoughts on Germany’s hip hop scene. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Motown, the iconic record label launched in 1959 in Detroit, Michigan by Berry Gordy Jr., Carhartt WIP will release a thirteen-piece capsule collection in the coming weeks. The collaboration honors a label that reshaped the sound of American pop music, diversifying its airwaves in the process. 

To mark the collection launch, we reached out to Detroit native Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann and asked him to prepare a strictly Motown music Carhartt WIP Radio show, that displays his personal love for the label.
 
As Moodymann is not man for hasty reactions, he delivered a detailed mix featuring rare b-sides, interviews and live recordings by Motown artists like Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Steve Wonder, Kem and Dazz Band. Asked about his very own feelings towards his mix, Kenny Dixon Jr. simply says: “No matter where I‘m standing it’s good to hear home sometimes. These songs are woven into the soundtrack of my own personal movie.”  There is nothing more to add, only: enjoy the ride!
