Joints & Jams w/ Beat Pete - November 2023

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show features the New York-based producer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist @keiyaa. 

Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, keiyaA grew up singing in the Chicago Children's Choir, before studying the alto saxophone. Today, she combines her jazz training with stirring vocals and neo-soul sensibilities to create richly textured, yet introspective music. Her sound touches r&b, hip hop, and jazz, while also venturing into IDM, ambient, and experimental realms. 

For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, keiyaA has created a mix that features unreleased music, remixes and collaborative works, creating a deep, spiritual flow of experimental grooves, bouncy bass lines, and fourth-world rhythms, all combined with her signature mix of song, rap, spoken word.

BeatPete - Tranquility - Vinyl Mix - 2016

This month Carhartt WIP Radio features a musical journey by producer, DJ and Akashik Records co-founder Ringgo Ancheta, aka Mndsgn. Raised with Gospel music at church and B-Boy culture at home in south New Jersey, he began experimenting with beat making when he was 14, before befriending fellow producer Knxwledge. The two would eventually go on to form the influential Klipmode collective.

After moving to Los Angeles, Mndsgn's music flourished, catching the attention of labels such Stones Throw and Leaving Records, who put out his albums Yawn Zen, Surface Outtakes and Body Wash. His latest project is titled Snax – a mixtape brimming with esoteric hip hop flavours and freshly cut Mndsgn remixes, and one which also serves as the debut release for his brand new label Ringgo.

About to embark upon a European tour – presented by Carhartt WIP – which will take him to Lisbon, Madrid, Cologne, Berlin, London, The Hague and Milan, we asked him to prepare a show that focuses on the releases of Akashik Records, the little DIY label he has run with his buddies Alima and Shane Sakanoi since 2015. The result is a unique, nonchalant mix of twisted contemporary electronics, driving funk, hot soul, agitating hip hop, and silky R&B.

Mitsu the Beat’s first solo LP, ‘A New Awakening’ was released in 2013. His group, GAGLE, were signed to the Jazzy Sport label. After releasing his first LP, which featured the likes of K-Otix, Dwele, Mark de Clive Lowe, Rich Medina and many more, he found himself being name checked by the likes of Pete Rock, Gilles Peterson and DJ Spinna. He was chosen as one of the hundred artists to look out for on URB magazine in 2004 and was only Japanese artist to be listed. His world tour has been successful in the States, EU and Asia and he has gained increased global popularity. His Boiler Room archive has been played more than 40 thousand times. His Hip-Hop unit GAGLE has released their 6th album “Vanta Black” in 2018 and his solo album “All This Love” is ready to be released in 2019.
