With his fourth release on -OUS, Furtherset presents an intriguing three-part EP that plots a unique confluence of ambient, experimental electronics and modern classical; three chapters of stratospheric drama and depth that set the stage for his long-awaited forthcoming album.

‘Auras’ begins with the gentle drift of sparks and tremors, moving into delicately wrought, disintegrative currents of sound, before sustaining a sense of elevated physicality, and expanding outwards, reaching for the beyond. Furtherset develops new compositions with the mindset of a writer who approaches the blank page of a new book. Articulations appear, briefly at first, then develop into words, then into sentences, and finally, a compelling story is formed.

Rhythms transition into melodies, harmonics are added almost imperceptibly, creating an abundant filigree of sound. ‘Auras’ is a spiralling work of glitch and slippage, of surge and overload, of stillness and suspension.  

Furtherset’s new music is time dilating and dimensional, creating space and stature, a world which contains dazzling and manifold tonalities. ‘Auras’ illustrates an evolution: «I wanted to have much more clarity and technical precision, to make everything more crystalline». Like the prismatic light of a crystal ‘Auras’ changes as each element comes into focus. Here Furtherset takes the listener on an emotive, mercurial journey, designing a towering universe of evocative sensation and memory. 
Furtherset is the musical project of italian musician and artist Tommaso Pandolfi — class of 1995. His music is an open invitation to immerse oneself into a weightless states of mind. Exhaling growth and inhaling decay, his walls of sound are restlessly built from layered and looped harmonies, shifting modulations and sampled voices. The figures are pushed over the tipping point to where they explode and are then reshaped into melodic cascades.

Nine is the magic number, making this a very special release since the 2005-launch of the artist's previous album, Udefra. So following a busy period of collaborations, projects and performances - Sofus brings us FM Volta: featuring a fusion of man-machine energies, identifying in particular with the modular synthesizer.

From the bizarre and eccentric to the dark and spacey: non-standard techniques in music production have culminated in some incredibly experimental sounds. This latest album is a sonic animation in the truest sense of the word – a painting of sound vibrations inspired by band members: the modular synthesizer, drum/FX machines and mixer.
 
The artist demonstrates a fascination with the 'patterns of sound' illustrated by nature:  “If we look at geometry and the pre-designed elements of nature – everything is already there, so I feel I am channeling that information. So by studying things like the Fibonacci sequence of numbers and fractals – I am simply presenting ideas of how I see the world and the universe. It's all connected – just like music, maths and science.”

From John Coltrane and Hendrix to Autechre: inspiration for music is discovered throughout the ages. The FM Volta album is a revelation though as it follows a nine-year spell of experimenting, studying, exploring, performing and collaborating. It's been a long-time coming - yet Sofus Forsberg has reached one of the most defining pinacles of his musical career with this exceptional new release, in which he unveils a fascinating approach to music production.

The artist will continue to share, collaborate and release new material well into 2014. It's going to be an interesting year ahead. In the meantime, we are happy to share with you this new production from the artist – so feel inspired and watch this space for more from Sofus Forsberg this year.

About Her

Subject to Drift has been recorded in October 2015 with a Roland TB303 and a TR606 running through a computer programmed with algorithms for digital signal processing. Like a prism breaking up the light into its spectral components, the computer based processing dissects the sound of the Roland boxes enhancing a higher resolution insight into the sound matter. By processing the TB303 and TR606 through many layers of delay lines is indeed possible to explore polyrhythms, therefore unfolding the spectral complexity wrapped in a single pattern and addressing the listener perspective towards the microscopic details of the sound spectrum. 

The TB303 is one of the most influential and iconic musical instruments of the last 30 years, having played a critical role in the definition of the so called “acid” sound and being involved in the development of dance music genres. Being at the core of different dance music aesthetics, the possibility to interact with a pattern based memory and a limited set of parameters is one the TB303’s design feature that mostly inspired the research underlying this work.

Carlo Maria's sound is a paradox. Trained in compositional techniques having little to do with the dance floor, he channels his mindset through the needle's eye of minimalistic grooves –glassy, euphonious and somewhat somber.
